All the stats and numbers recorded during the 4th day of the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne:
A rare declaration from India:
3 – This Test match is only the 3rd game outside home for India where they declared both their innings. They declared both their innings in the 2004 Sydney Test also against Australia and the 2007 Chittagong Test match against Bangladesh; both matches ended in a draw.
106/8 – India’s total of 106/8 is their 3rd lowest declaration in a Test match. They declared on 97/1 in the 1985 Kanpur Test match against England and 100/6 in the 2007 Chittagong Test against Bangladesh. The top three instances in this list were during the 3rd innings of the Test only.
Cummins’ impressive all-round show:
2 – This was the 2nd time Pat Cummins has scored a fifty and bagged a five-fer in the same Test match in 2018. He recorded this double during the Johannesburg Test against South Africa. Hugh Trumble in 1902 and Brett Lee in 2008 are the other Australians with this all-round double twice in a year.
6 – Cummins became only the 6th player and the 5th Australian with a 60+ score and 6-wicket haul in the second innings of a Test match. Dilruwan Perera in the 2016 Galle Test against Australia was the last to do this double.
8 – Pat Cummins is only the 8th player and the 3rd Australian to score 60+ runs in an innings while batting at No.8 or lower and take a 6-wicket haul while coming as first change in the same Test match.
1 – Cummins is also the first player in Test history to score 60+ runs and take a 6-wicket haul in the 2nd innings of a Test while batting at No.8 or lower and while coming to bowl as first change.
A year to remember for Bumrah:
47 – Number of wickets Jasprit Bumrah has taken in Test cricket in 2018; the 3rd most by any bowler in the year of debut. Australia’s Terry Alderman bagged 54 wickets in 1981 while Windies’ Curtly Ambrose claimed 49 wickets in 1988.
77 – Jasprit Bumrah’s 77 wickets in International cricket in 2018 are the most by an Indian pacer in a calendar year since Zaheer Khan’s 79 wickets in 2007. Bumrah featured in 30 International matches in 2018 and bowled in 39 innings while Zaheer bowled in 49 innings in 40 matches.
A solid debut for Mayank:
2 – Mayank Agarwal became the 2nd Indian to claim three catches and score 100+ runs in the debut Test match. Surinder Amarnath scored 133 runs including a 124-run knock and took three catches on his debut in the 1976 Auckland Test against New Zealand. Mayank could have been the 3rd Indian to score twin fifties on Test debut had he scored eight more runs in the 2nd innings.
118 – Mayank’s match-aggregate of 118 runs is the 2nd highest for any visiting player on Test debut at the MCG. Windies’ Roy Fredericks aggregated 123 runs in the 1968 Test match here on his debut. Both Fredericks and Agarwal made 76 in their first innings but 47 and 42 respectively in the second essay.
118 – Agarwal’s 118 runs are the 2nd most by an Indian opener in an away Test match on debut. Sunil Gavaskar aggregated 132 runs on his debut against Windies in the 1971 Port of Spain Test with scores of 65 and 67*.
Jadeja gets Marsh again:
4 – Ravindra Jadeja got the wicket of Mitchell Marsh in both the innings of this Test. Overall, Jadeja has dismissed the younger Marsh on four occasions in Test cricket. He conceded 11 runs in 71 balls including a six which Marsh hit just before getting out.
