However, the rain gods haven’t been fair to the Indians who wanted to finish the series with their 3rd win at the SCG. Kuldeep Yadav’s five-wicket haul played a crucial role in helping India gain a 322-run lead. The Aussies ended the day on 6/0 at the stumps on day four where only 25.2 overs were possible due to the rain.

A rare follow-on for Australia:

4 – Only the 4th time India have enforced a follow-on over Australia in a Test match and only the 2nd such instance in Australia. India made the Australians follow-on in the 1988 SCG Test and twice in the 1979 home Test series prior to this game.

1988 – The last instance of Australia being forced to follow-on in a Test match at home was during the 1988 Sydney Test against England on February 1st.

2005 – The last time any team enforced follow-on in a Test match in Australia was during the 2005 Nottingham Test. The team was England and it is the only other instance when Australia followed-on in a Test match in the last 30 years.

Kohli’s follow-on record:

6 – Number of times India have enforced follow-on under Virat Kohli’s captaincy in Test cricket. India enforced the follow-on more times only under Mohammad Azharuddin (7 times).

6 – Since the start of 2015, Virat forced the opposition to follow-on in six different instances. In this span, only Faf du Plessis (2 times), Alastair Cook (2 times) and Sarfraz Ahmed (2 times) have enforced a follow-on more than once. Seven other captains had one such instance in this period.

Kuldeep Yadav’s five-fer:

2 – Number of five-wicket hauls for Indian spinners in the last 18 Test matches; both by Kuldeep Yadav. The left-arm wrist spinner claimed 5/57 in the Rajkot Test against the Windies last year.

2007 – Kuldeep’s five-fer was first for an Indian spinner in 15 Test matches on Australian soil. Anil Kumble’s 5/84 in the 2007 MCG Test was the last 5-fer by an Indian spinner in Australia.

2012 – The last instance when a visiting spinner picked up a five-fer in Australia was back in December 2012 when Rangana Herath picked up 5/95 in the Hobart Test match for Sri Lanka.

A huge lead for India:

322 – The 322-run lead is India’s 2nd biggest first innings lead in Test cricket against Australia. They claimed a lead of 400 runs in the 1998 Kolkata Test as they produced 633/5 in response to Australia’s 233. This is also the first time India took a 300+ first innings lead in a Test match in Australia. The 292-run lead in the Melbourne Test was the previous biggest for India in Australia.
