Australia vs India, 2018-19: 4th Test – Statistical Highlights
All the major stats and numbers that were recorded by India with the series win in Australia.
India’s hopes of making the series 3-1 after enforcing the follow-on didn’t go on expected lines as only four overs of Australia’s second innings was possible due to the rain in Sydney. Thus, Australia escaped from getting bowled out as the Indian bowlers bundled them on all the previous seven innings. However, the rain did not stop the visitors from claiming their maiden Test series as they won the matches in Adelaide and Melbourne and lost in Perth.
All the major stats and numbers that were recorded by India with the series win in Australia:
India make history
1 – India became the first country from Asia to win a Test series in Australia. They are only the 5th visiting country to win a Test series on Australian soil.
A first for Pujara:
1 – This was the first time Cheteshwar Pujara claimed the player of the Test series award. Two of the six “Player of the match awards” Pujara has got in Test cricket have been in this very Test series – in Adelaide and in Sydney.
A ton less series for Australia:
2 – Only the second time India did not concede an individual century in a Test series of four and more matches. The other one is the 2015 Freedom Series at home against South Africa. Both have come under Virat Kohli’s captaincy.
79 – Marcus Harris’ 79 in the first innings of the Sydney Test is the highest individual score for Australia in this Test series. This is only the 4th four or more matches Test series without an individual ton for Australia. This is also their 2nd lowest “highest individual score” in a Test series of 3+ games. Australia’s highest individual score during the 1888 3-match Ashes series was only 32.
The 79 is also the 3rd lowest highest individual score in a Test series of 4 and more matches for any team. New Zealand in the 1958 5-match away series against England had the best score of 66 while Pakistan in the 1954 4-match away series also against England had the best score of 69.
Only four bowlers for Australia:
3 – Only the 3rd time only four bowlers picked up all the wickets to fall for a team in a four or more match Test series. The bowling attack of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon took all the Indian wickets to fall in this series.
These four accounted for all the bowling wickets during 2017/18 home Ashes series. England recorded one such instance against Pakistan in the 2010 4-match home Test series where only James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Steve Finn and Graeme Swann picked up wickets for the hosts.
India at the edge of completing the set:
8 – India is one of the four teams to win a Test series against 8 different Test countries away from home. Australia and South Africa are the only teams to win an away series against 9 different teams in Test cricket while England also has away series wins against eight different sides. India has not won a Test series in South Africa while England awaits for their first in Zimbabwe. (Among First 10 Test nations)
