It was the SCG that hosted the final match of the series. This was the game that would decide if India lose their first T20I series (except one-off) to Australia or extend the home team’s dry run this year. Batting first the Australians posted a good looking 164/4 but when the Indian openers get going, no target is big enough. Skipper Virat Kohli also scored a fifty and took the team home quite comfortably.
Aaron Finch won the toss and decided to bat first. A big total in such a game is always an advantage. Finch and D’Arcy Short ensured they got off to a really good start but once the spinners were in action, the dynamics changed rather quickly. Kuldeep Yadav first dismissed the opposition skipper for 28 and then Krunal Pandya got into his own.
The left-arm spinner scalped Short for 33, didn’t let Ben McDermott who was promoted to No.4 settle, Glenn Maxwell was his next victim for 13 and also accounted for Alex Cary to finish his four overs with a four-wicket haul. His figures of 4-0-36-4 are the best by an Indian bowler in a T20I in Australia.
Towards the end Marcus Stoinis and Nathan Coulter-Nile gave the Aussies a push and they finished with 164. The chase would’ve been a challenge for India had they lost early wickets. Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma had another plan. They were batting with a strike rate of 200 each and the Indian team scored 67 runs in the mandatory powerplay.
Dhawan was the first one to be dismissed as the big man Mitchell Starc got one to hit him plumb in front of the stumps. He scored 41 from 22 balls with six boundaries and two sixes. Rohit’s stay didn’t last longer and he was on his way back a couple of overs later missing one from the leg-spinner Adam Zampa.
Skipper Kohli walked in at No.3 and looked at his best, meanwhile KL Rahul threw away another opportunity and so did Rishabh Pant who bagged a golden duck. Dinesh Karthik then gave Kohli the required support as he scored his first fifty on the tour. The duo took India over the line quite comfortably with 6 wickets to spare and thus levelled the series 1-1.
