Australia vs India: India succumb to new lows in their Test history

India stumbled on 3rd day morning at the Adelaide Oval as they collapsed to mere 36 runs and handed over the match to the Australians. Resuming the day on 9/1, the Indian team lost the wicket of night-watchman Jasprit Bumrah at the score of 15. By the time they another 11 more runs, India were 8 wickets down with only 26 runs on the board. Josh Hazlewood claimed a 5-wicket haul while Pat Cummins picked up four wickets before Mohammed Shami walked off after getting hit on his hand.

2 – India’s second innings is now only the 2nd team innings in Test history where all the 11 batsmen ended up with single digits scores. Mayank Agarwal’s 9 turned out to be India’s highest individual score of the game. The other such innings was recorded by South Africa when they got bowled out for 30 against England in the 1924 Birmingham Test with a highest individual score of 7 runs.

5/8 – Josh Hazlewood ended up with bowling analyses of 5-3-8-5 in the second innings. The eight runs Hazlewood conceded are the 3rd fewest by any Australian while claiming a 5-wicket haul in Test cricket. Ernie Toshack took 5/2 against India in the 1947 Gabba Test while Bert Ironmonger had figures of 5/6 in the 1932 Melbourne Test against South Africa.

11 – India lost 7 wickets for 11 runs as they went down from 15/1 to 26/8 in the space of 11 overs. This is India’s joint-worst 7-wicket collapse in Test cricket as they lost 7 wickets for 11 runs in the first innings of the 2017 Pune Test against Australia.

25 – Hazlewood completed his 5-wicket in only 25 balls after coming into the attack. This is now the joint 5th fastest 5-wicket haul by any player in Test cricket. This is also the 2nd fastest fifer against India in Tests behind Ernie Toshack’s 5-wicket haul in 19 balls during the 1947 Brisbane Test match.

36 – The total of 36 by India is now their lowest total in the Test format surpassing the 42/10 which they recorded against England during the 1974 Lord’s Test match.

India lost their 6th, 7th, 8th and 9th wickets at the score of 19, 26, 26, and 31 respectively; all of them being the lowest totals of India at the fall of 6, 7, 8 and 9 wickets in a Test inning.

36 – India’s total of 36 is the joint-lowest total on Australian soil in the Test format equaling South Africa’s 36/10 against the hosts in the 1932 Melbourne Test. India’s total of 36 is also the lowest Test total by any team since New Zealand got bowled out for 26 back in 1955 Auckland Test against England.

41 – The lowest total in first-class cricket at the Adelaide Oval was recorded by Western Australia in 1990 when they got bowled out for 41 runs against the home side, South Australia. India, with their total of 36, recorded the lowest total in the first-class history at the Adelaide Oval.

3 – The 10th wicket partnership of India in the 2nd innings is only the 3rd in Test history which came to an end with a batsman retiring hurt. New Zealand’s first innings in the Birmingham 1965 against England (Retired hurt: Bert Sutcliffe) and their 2nd innings also against England in the 1975 Auckland Test (Retired hurt: Ewen Chatfield) are the other two such instances.
