Australia vs India: Virender Sehwag feels that there is a lot to learn from the Perth Test loss
Sehwag also backed the team to make a comeback in the Boxing Day Test.
The high of the Adelaide win is gone within no time as Australia staged a magnificent comeback at Perth. At the new Optus stadium, the hosts have registered their first Test win since March. Incidentally, this is also the first one under Tim Paine and the six-match winless streak finally comes to an end. Former Indian opener, Virender Sehwag has pointed out the learnings for the visitors from this 146-run thumping.
Viru pointed out quite a few areas where the team has erred. Firstly, he criticised the team selection in his latest tweet. India picked up Umesh Yadav in the XI instead of opting for a frontline spinner. This did cost them big time as the track had a great deal of assistance for the spinner.
Four number eleven players in the XI
Furthermore, there wasn’t enough batting in the tank for the visitors. They had only seven players who could bat. The remaining four, i.e, Umesh Yadav, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah are all number eleven batsmen according to Virender Sehwag. The men at number eight, nine, ten and eleven are very little known for their batting and it was evident in this game.
Also, despite having four pure seamers, Australia got a 100+ start which is another downside for the former Indian opener. He took an indirect dig at the Indian openers KL Rahul and Murali Vijay by writing that the team got off to poor starts in both the innings. In the end, Sehwag hoped for team India to turn things around in the Boxing Day Test which will be played at Melbourne from December 26.
‘Plenty can be learned from a loss. India not only played 4 fast bowlers, but 4 number 11 batsmen who had to bat 8-9- 10-11 . Still Australia got 100 + start and India started poorly in both innings. Hope India can turn things around in Melbourne,’ wrote Sehwag.
