Australia women's T20 World Cup 2020 triumph artwork to be displayed at the MCG
Australia had beaten India by 85 runs in the final at the MCG on this very day two years ago.
The Australian women’s cricket team are the most successful team with a combined 11 world titles to their name (six ODIs and five T20Is). They won the last two editions of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cups in 2018 and 2020 respectively. In fact, it was on this very day in 2020 that they lifted the T20 World Cup with a thumping 85-run win over India.
It has been exactly two years since the Aussies’ title triumph in front of a packed MCG crowd with a record 86,174 fans in attendance and now, all the members of that victorious squad have got an honorable mention by Australian painter Vincent Fantauzzo who has come up with artwork, which shows the Australian team lifting the Women’s T20 World Cup for a record fifth time.
Australia’s fifth Women’s T20 World Cup win to be etched in MCG history
On March 7, Fantauzzo’s artwork was unveiled at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. As per reports, the idea is to put the artwork on display along the route of the famous MCG Tour, which attracts around 130,000 people every year. What really makes it even more special is that this will be the first-ever artwork that features any women’s sporting team finding a permanent display at the iconic MCG.
“The ICC Women’s World Cup final in 2020 was a special day, and now to have a piece of artwork to remember the occasion is really exciting,” said the Australian skipper Meg Lanning in a media release as quoted as saying by NDTV.
“Whilst we couldn’t be there, having the artwork unveiled the night before International Women’s Day – which will mark two years since winning the final – reminds us of what can be achieved”, she added.
The Australian team are currently chasing a record seventh ODI World Cup in New Zealand and have been outstanding so far in the ongoing edition of the ICC Women’s World Cup 2022. They have won their opening two fixtures against the reigning world champions England and Pakistan by 12 runs and seven wickets respectively.
