Watch: Australia won the match while Graeme Smith won hearts: There have been moments on the field of cricket that will be cherished for ages. The moment Graeme Smith walked out to bat at the SCG in January 2009 is one of them. Steve Waugh batted with bruised right hand, while Asim Kamal batted with an injury against India. But this will top the charts.

Mitchell Johnson zeroed a quick one to Smith, as South Africa started on a good note, with the scoreboard ticking at 34/0. The ball hit Smith’s finger while the pain was to be seen on his face. Graeme Smith headed back to the pavilion with a broken hand. Australia gripped a tale, as Africa were floored at 257/9. The world thought the match was over, but Graeme Smith walked out to bat with a broken arm.

The crowd cheered for a hero, as Smith made his way out on the field. A shirt was borrowed from Jacques Kallis and Paul Harris’ hamburger stain was all over the pullover. Injections worked just fine, as “Biff” faced the Australian pack. Australia needed 1 wicket, South Africa had to bat for 8 overs. Leaving was little better, as Smith blocked the cherry with agony. Ntini played out Bollinger, as Smith successfully put bat to ball. For a moment it seemed 11 Australians had given up hopes, as Smith fought through pain. Johnson bowled one to the stumps, as the swing missed the dodging bat, and the match was over. Australia won the game but it was Graeme Smith who won hearts with his bravado.
