Australian captain Steve Smith is a perfectionist

Australian skipper Steven Smith has been one of the biggest revelations the game of cricket has witnessed. A diminutive all-rounder who has taken great strides in his career and flourished into one of the most successful captains the country has witnessed.

Led by the 28-year-old, the Aussies are currently preparing for their upcoming Ashes tour. And in a recent video which surfaced on Instagram, the right-hander was caught on tape perfecting his craft during a practice session. Smith was undergoing drills, wherein he had predestined targets and he would have to hit them. Given the perfectionist that Smith is, it almost looked like a cakewalk for him as he hit the targets on every consecutive chance.

While the team looks set and prepped up, the Aussie team management is yet to decide on a No. 6 batsman. For long, they have been devoid of an able and in-form batsman for the spot and with the Ashes closing in, Smith would be hoping to find the replacement in time.

Many thought Smith would be the next Shane Warne

When Smith first came into the Australian team in 2010, many thought he would be the next Shane Warne. Between Warne’s retirement in January 2007 and Smith’s debut, the country had used a number of spinners – Stuart McGill, Brad Hogg, Jason Krejza, Beau Casson, Bryce McGain and even Cameron White.

His watershed moment, however, came in the back-to-back Ashes tournaments later that year. His unbeaten 138 at Oval was the only positive of Australia’s disappointing Ashes outing in England.

Smith’s best effort, though, came in the return Ashes that summer in Australia. He scored 2 tons – at Perth and Sydney – digging Australia out of a hole on both occasions. His vital contributions helped Australia thrash England 5-0 and regain the urn.

His purple patch continued. His 100 at Centurion and 84 at Cape Town helped Australia beat South Africa 2-1 and reclaim the No. 1 Test ranking for a brief period.
