It was an intensely fought 4 match series between India and Australia and despite controversies taking centre stage, both teams deserve special applause for treating us with some exceptional cricket over the past month or so. While Aussie captain Steve Smith apologised for letting his emotion get the better of him, Team India captain Virat Kohli was vocal as usual and said he no longer counted the Australian players as friends.

The Australian media lashed out at Kohli for his remarks just like the way they have done throughout the series. One knows Kohli is not someone to get bogged down and irrespective of what happens in the future, he will let his emotions known to the world. The Aussie media also called him as ‘egomaniac’ for his behaviour and it won’t go down well the Indian fans and supporters.

“Virat Kohli had to shake hands and move on after series win but he acted like a child,” read a headline in Daily Telegraph while another headline read, “Beergate: Kohli’s latest classless act”. An author in the Australian’s Peter Lalor wrote, “If there were any doubts about the poor spirit between the Indian and Australian sides it was confirmed after the series when the home side shunned a suggestion the two sides drink together.”

The Australian captain is well aware of the fact that he will need the support of the Indian spectators when he walks out in the field to captain the Rising Pune Supergiant in the upcoming IPL scheduled to start in less than a week’s time. He might have apologised for calling Murali Vijay a “f…..g cheat after the latter claimed a catch, but it might well come down to the fact that he will be playing the next one and a half months in India.

Steve also asked his IPL teammate Ajinkya Rahane and the rest of the team members to join them for a round of beer. “I asked if he wanted us to come in for a drink, this being the end of the series. He said he’d get back to me. With Ajinkya, we get on well,” Smith was quoted as saying by TOI.

Despite failing to win the series in India which would have been a historic achievement for the Australian side, they can take a lot of positives from the tour. When they came here, everyone predicted a 4-0 outcome in favour of India but the way they responded and gave India a tough fight deserves a round of applause.
