Cricket fanatics who have been watching the sport since the 90’s have all witnessed the ‘Ball of the Century’, also referred to as the Gatting Ball, bowled by Australian spin bowling wizard Shane Warne to English batsman Mike Gatting on Day two of the first Test of the 1993 Ashes at Manchester. The delivery received such a nomenclature owing to Warne’s sheer brilliance wherein he pitched the ball on the leg stump and it spun sharply to hit off the stumps. It absolutely stunned the batsman who had a look on his face like he’d seen a ghost. A delivery that remains etched in Ashes and world cricket folklore forever.

And now 24 years later, Australia’s Amanda-Jade Wellington, playing in her debut Ashes Test, claimed England’s Tammy Beaumont with a magnificent leg break that prompted pundits across the globe to compare her delivery to Shane Warne’s ‘ball of the century’. Similar to Warne’s, the delivery drifted on to the leg stump and it spun away sharply to hit the top of off stump.

It was a special moment for the 20-year-old leg spinner, who had replaced experienced leg-spinner Kirsten Beams in a bid to earn her Ashes debut. The Three Lions could only manage to salvage a draw after Ellyse Perry’s stunning double hundred threatened to take the only Test away from them on the tour. The teams will next head into a three-match T20I series starting November 17, with the hosts leading their opponents by two points.

The video of the dismissal has gone viral on social media and has prompted comparisons with Warne’s effort in 1993.

There has been another name which drew similar comparisons. About two years ago, West Indies spinner Devendra Bishoo attracted similar praise when he cleaned up Australia vice-captain Brad Haddin in a Test in Dominica in 2015, with a delivery that pitched on middle and leg, turned away sharply to crash into the off-stump.
