Australia's PM Scott Morrison backs Nathan Lyon to help the hosts level the series in Sydney
He also congratulated the Indian team for a wonderful show so far in the series.
Scott Morrison, the Honorable Prime Minister of Australia, rendered his special address in the New Year’s Day Cricket Reception at Kirribili House, Sydney. The event was graced by several members, both former and current, of Australian cricket team as well as their Indian counterparts.
The transcript of the speech is available on the official website of the Prime Minister of Australia. As per the script, the leader of the Liberal Party talked upon several aspects pertaining to cricket right from the inspiring initiative taken by the Glenn McGrath Foundation to fight breast cancer to the ongoing Test series between India and Australia. While talking about the four-match series, Scott made a beautiful remark about Australia’s front-line spinner Nathan Lyon which must have made the off-spinner feel immensely proud of himself.
The Prime Minister calls Lyon the ‘GOAT’
After addressing a string of cricketing aspects, Scott Morrison threw some light on the Test series. Given that India is 2-1 ahead with the last and final match starting at Sydney on Thursday, the dynamic politician believed that nothing is over yet for the hosts. He felt that the wicket at the SCG would suit the spinners more and so Australia’s spin wizard Nathan Lyon would play a huge role.
Taking a light-hearted hint at Lyon’s nickname GOAT, a popular acronym for Greatest of All Time, the Prime Minister backed the 31-year old to do wonders for his team in the final Test. He said, ” I think Australians have enjoyed it thoroughly and there is still a lot more to enjoy in what I understand will be a turning wicket. So Nathan, do you best mate. Do your best. Live up to that ‘GOAT’ nickname and ensure it turns to your favour”.
The PM’s accolades for Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri
Scott also went on to congratulate the Indian captain Virat Kohli and the head coach Ravi Shastri for the team’s performance in the ongoing edition of Border-Gavaskar Trophy. “Can I congratulate Ravi Shastri and Virat Kohli for the way that your team have played in this Series and the great exhibition you have put on all around Australia”, he said.
He also threw light on the rich legacy of the India-Australia rivalry over the years by pointing out that India have won the series 19 times overall and Australia have won just one short at 18.
