Mumbai Indians (MI) faced Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 14th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022. The five-time champions were desperate for two points and were putting in a very good effort to defend 161 runs with the ball. Everything was going to plan for Rohit Sharma and his troops. Perhaps they were ahead in the game when Tymal Mills got the better of Andre Russell with KKR still needing 61 runs to win in less than seven overs.

But what followed later was absolute carnage. Pat Cummins, playing his first game of the season, came out to bat at seven and just turned the game on its head. He was probably taking revenge of the pasting he got with the ball, having conceded 49 runs off his four-over spell. But this hitting was something different.

He took on MI’s best bowler Jasprit Bumrah as well when he was probably brought on to dismiss Venkatesh Iyer, the only recognised KKR batter left in the middle. Well, Cummins had other ideas as he hit him for a six and a four to bring the equation down to 35 runs off last five overs.

And then happened the unthinkable. Daniel Sams kept on bowling and Pat Cummins kept on hitting the ball out of the ground. The latter smashed 35 runs in one over to literally end the game with four overs to spare. It was some mad hitting and clearly MI skipper Rohit Sharma was not happy with the execution of plans in the middle.

Rather his frustration was visible ahead of the post-match presentation ceremony speaking as a losing captain where he vented his frustration. He wasn’t able to hear the question from Danny Morrison, one of the commentators, and got irritated asking to increase the volume. ‘Awaaz badhao yaar uska,” Rohit Sharma was heard saying. However, the man calmed himself down later to answer some questions post the loss.

Rohit Sharma Lauds Pat Cummins

Rohit Sharma lauded Pat Cummins for his exceptional knock and admitted that he never expected such kind of a knock from Australia’s Test captain. He also lamented the fact the bowlers didn’t bowl according to plan after having things under control for most parts of the innings.

“Never expected him to come and play like that [on Cummins]. Lot of credit. The pitch got better and better to bat as the game went on. It was holding up initially. Overall it was a good pitch. With the bat we did not start well, in the last 4-5 overs to get 70+ was a great effort from the batting unit. We did not bowl according to the plan. We had the game till the 15th over, but then Cummins was brilliant.”

“Whenever you have runs on the board, you always have the upper hand, We had them 5-down, it was just a matter of the wicket of Venky or Pat, they had Sunil who could smash them. This will be hard to digest, the way it turned out in the last few overs. We have a lot of hard work ahead of us,” Rohit said.
