Bangladesh appoints Wasim Jaffer as academy batting coach
The 41-year old recently plied his trade as a player in Bangladesh, playing for Abahani Limited in the recently-concluded Dhaka Premier League.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has roped in India’s domestic legend Wasim Jaffer as the batting coach for game development of its high-performance academy in Dhaka. The 41-year old recently plied his trade as a player in Bangladesh, playing for Abahani Limited in the recently-concluded Dhaka Premier League. This is where the Bangladesh officials were impressed with Jaffer and his reputation was further enhanced when Soumya Sarkar credited him for his form.
Sarkar overcomes poor form to star for Abahani. The left-hander smashed a hundred against Legends of Rupganj and followed that up with a record double hundred against Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club to propel Abahani Limited to their 20th title. Soumya became the first Bangladesh batsman to score a double-century in a List A match. Following the knocks Sarkar had revealed that Wasim Jaffer‘s inputs had helped him regain his form.
“I have seen his (Wasim) batting very closely. He is a very good and experienced player. He has scored 40,000 runs in his career. Since he scored such amount of runs, so he definitely has the quality,” Soumya had told Cricbuzz before adding: “I have understood how he thinks in the field and outside the field. I also follow his way of batting. I talked with him about this, nothing more than that and just tried to follow his instructions.”
According to a report in The Times of India, the Bangladesh officials had approached Jaffer during his stay in Dhaka and the latter accepted the proposal. Jaffer, who played 31 Tests and two ODIs for India, will spend six months in a year with Bangladesh’s batsmen at the academy. At the academy, Jaffer will train Bangladesh batsmen in the U-19s, the A team and also the senior side. This will be Jaffer’s first international coaching assignment.
No signs of slowing down
Despite age not on his side, Jaffer continues to be one of the best batsmen in the domestic circuit. After ending his long association with Mumbai, the legendary batsman has helped Vidarbha win back-to-back Ranji Trophy titles and Irani Cup titles. He will now be looking to help Vidarbha make a hat-trick of titles.
