Bangladesh cricket strained to make an impact and was far from their best in the previous year. In both Tests and limited-over fixtures, they have mostly been brushed aside comprehensively. In nine Tests, they managed to win a couple against Sri Lanka and Australia respectively. Apart from that, they lost seven games, which included a couple of whitewash against New Zealand and South Africa.

In the ODI format, they managed only four wins out of their 14 games while losing seven of them. Their record in T20Is has been abysmal as well as they could only manage a solitary win out of their seven games. Quite expectantly, their cricket board wasn’t delighted by how things panned out for the national team. Subsequently, they cancelled the contracts of six players as per reports in Sportstar.

The message for Bangladesh cricketers

Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes, Sabbir Rahman, Taskin Ahmed, Mosaddek Hossain and Kamrul Islam Rabbi have been ousted from the list of contracted players. Meanwhile, 10 cricketers in Shakib Al Hasan, Mashrafe Mortaza, Mominul Haque, Taijul Islam, Mehedi Hasan, Mushfiqur Rahim, Tamim Iqbal, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain and Mahmudullah have been awarded national contracts.

Recently, Habibul Bashar, the chief selector, sent a stern message to cricketers in the nation. “For contracts, we mostly preferred players who would perform regularly over the next one year. Some players have lost their regular spot in the team. They needed to be sent a message. Getting dropped does not mean the door is closed for them. Everyone will get a fair chance in future.” Bashar iterated.

Meanwhile, Nazmul Hassan, the President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), previously said that the contracted players won’t be getting a pay-hike during the year. Shakib, Mushfiqur and Mortaza are currently the highest paid cricketers with a salary of $ 5121 per month which translates to 420,000 taka.
