Bangladesh vs Windies: Tamim Iqbal set to return after injury lay-off

Bangladesh opener Tamim Iqbal is set to return to international cricket in the ODI series against Windies as the star batsman will be a part of the squad, confirmed an official from the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) on Saturday. The left-handed batsman has been out of action for the past couple of months ever since the Asia Cup, where he suffered a wrist injury in the opening match of the tournament against Sri Lanka in the United Arab Emirates.

Tamim was supposed to return to the national team in the ongoing two-match Test series against the Caribbean side, but unfortunately injured his rib during a practice session and that delayed his comeback into the team. The national selector gave a positive response when asked about Tamim’s return from injury.

They need some match practice

“He has been cleared by the physio to play the ODIs. We are expecting him to play from the start of the series,” chief selector Minhajul Abedin was quoted as saying in Sport 24.

The selectors named the Bangladesh Cricket Board XI on Saturday, which included star players Tamim Iqbal and regular ODI Captain Mashrafe Mortaza . The team led by Mortaza will play the tourists in a warm up game which will be held in the Bangladeshi capital on Thursday.

Barring the two senior players, the team also includes the likes of Imrul Kayes, Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Mithun, Ariful Haque, Rubel Hossain and Nazmul Islam, who have featured in the ODI side recently.

Minhajul said that the experienced duo was included in the practice game so that they get some game time before the ODI series. “We included Mashrafe and Tamim in the practice match squad as we felt they need some match practice before the series”, the chief selector added.

The Windies are currently trailing in the test series by 1-0. The team will then play in the ODI series which will be held in Dhaka and Sylhet starting from December 09.
