Bangladeshi cricketer Arafat Sunny accused of torturing wife and demanding dowry

Nasrin Sultana, the wife of Bangladeshi cricketer Arafat Sunny, accused him and his mother of demanding a huge sum as dowry and torturing her when she wasn’t able to pay it. Not just this, Nasrin also accused Sunny of ditching her when her family wasn’t able to meet the demands of their son-in-law.

The heart of the story

As per reports, the spinner was married to Nasrin Sultana on the 4th day of December 2014, with an endowment of Tk 5.1 lakhs. After marriage, they used to stay in Nasrin’s sister place at the Katasur area of Mohammadpur. Things were smooth then, but the tables turned on July 29, 2015, when Sunny and his mother demanded a huge sum of Tk 20 lakhs as dowry and tried to force Nasrin to ask her father for the hefty sum.

When Nasrin refused to meet the demands Sunny ditched her. Helpless, the lady filed an ICT case on January 5 with the Mohammadpur Police Station. She also stated that the cricketer has uploaded their intimate pictures on the social media platforms without her consent. Besides this, she also filed two cases against Arafat, one under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the other under the Dowry Prohibition Act, as per reports in the Dhaka Tribune.

He was arrested on 22nd July but was later released on bail in March when it was confirmed that the two parties had settled disputes. He was indicted again on the 16th of July but was granted bail this time as well, after the chikungunya-stricken player appealed for bail.

Sunny indicted again

While he may run out of the jail multiples times owing to the bails, it seems as if yesterday (October 12) wasn’t very ‘Sunny’ for him, since he was indicted again, this time by The Cyber Tribunal. The verdict has been passed on by Judge Md Saiful Islam, and it was announced that recording of statements of witnesses in the case will begin from November 21.
