Batsmen need to step up for Sunrisers Hyderabad, reckons Sunil Gavaskar

The bowlers have predominantly done the job when it comes to ensuring SRH victories in the IPL this season.

In what has been a nearly perfect campaign for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) aka the Orange Army so far in the tournament, the only problem of concern has been their constant batting failures. A team which has defended as low as 118 in this season, has succumbed to pressure on most occasion to put up great batting shows on display.

Apart from their skipper Kane Williamson, none of the batters has shown the might to take on the bowlers. The likes of Shikhar Dhawan and Manish Pandey, who were reckoned as the backbone of their batting order, have failed miserably to get going in this season. However, the sublime bowling attack has compensated for their cause but going ahead in the business end of the tournament, Sunrisers need to be wary of their under-firing batting order.

Need support for Kane Williamson

Legendary batsmen Sunil Gavaskar, in his writings for TOI, showed a similar concern as he alludes the lack of support for their skipper in Kane Williamson. Gavaskar seemed highly impressed with the Sunrisers’ captain who has somehow held their batting together. He wants the likes of Pandey and Dhawan to follow the example of their skipper who converts his starts into well-made 50s rather than flashy looking 20s.

Despite some regular failures at the top of the order, Sunrisers Hyderabad looks comfortable at the cliff of the points table but the batters need to shoulder more responsibility as they need to give their bowlers at least 180 to defend. Apart from Kane, Yusuf Pathan and Shakib Al-Hasan have played little cameos down the order, but it is time they need to bring more consistency in providing finishing touches to the innings.

Delhi challenge ahead

Sunrisers are in the capital city as they lock horns with Delhi Daredevils, a side languishing at the bottom of the table. But they need to cautious as the young Delhi side gave them a run for their money in their last meeting a few days back in the Sunrisers Hyderabad camp. Considering the small boundaries at Kotla and a rock-solid top order, Delhi might prove to be too good for the visitors if their batsmen don’t come to the party.

The likes of Prithwi Shaw, Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant, are riding high on confidence as the trio has managed to post huge totals for their franchise, more often than not.
