BBL 2019-20: Here's how Glenn Maxwell fulfilled the wish of his wicketkeeper Peter Handscomb
Maxwell bowled three economical overs where he gave away just 15 runs and took the crucial wickets of D'Arcy Short and David Miller.
Glenn Maxwell is having a great weak. The swashbuckling Australian all-rounder, who returned to cricket recently after having taken a break due to mental health-related issues, was racked up by a whopping amount of Rs 10.75 crores INR by the Anil Kumble-led Kings XI Punjab earlier this week in the Indian Premier League auction in Kolkata and the right-hander celebrated the occasion with a whirlwind 39-ball 83- an innings which included seven fours and five sixes- against Brisbane Heat in Queensland, the very next day.
In the succeeding game against Hobart Hurricanes, the Melbourne Stars skipper wasn’t as successful with the bat, as Riley Meredith brought a pre-mature end to his innings. But, that’s the thing with these multi-dimensional cricketers like Glenn Maxwell.
If they fail in one facet of the game, they’ll make sure they contribute to the other departments. And, Maxwell did just that. The right-hander bowled three economical overs where he gave away just 15 runs and took the crucial wickets of D’Arcy Short [9] and David Miller [7].
And, unknowingly, Maxwell also proceeded to fulfil the wish of his wicket-keeper Peter Handscomb. It so happened that the Melbourne Stars ‘keeper Peter Handscomb was mic’d up with the official broadcasters when he said “I think we just bowl spin in the powerplay depending on the matchups, so the two lefties are still here. I would have thought Maxi (Maxwell) keeps going. If he can get Shorty (D Arcy Short) out this ball, it would be nice,” Handscomb said while speaking live to the commentators.
Glenn Maxwell’s heist leaves the commentators gobsmacked
And, to the surprise of all- including the commentator’s and Handscomb himself- the Melbourne Stars skipper proceeded to dismiss D’Arcy Short on the very next delivery. And, “You would not believe it,” said the gobsmacked commentator.
Coming back to the game, it turned out to be a stroll in the park for the Stars. After having racked up 4-163 thanks to a whirlwind 54-ball 81 from Marcus Stoinis, the Stars, courtesy a five-wicket-haul from rookie fast bowler Haris Rauf [5-27], proceed to run through the Hurricanes’ batting line-up, to pick up a 52-run-win, capping off what has been a really good past few days for Glenn Maxwell.
