BBL 2020-21: The Qualifier, SIX vs SCO – A big defeat for the Scorchers, A record knock from James Vince and more stats

Defending champions Sydney Sixers became the first team to enter the final of the BBL 2020-21 as they thumped Perth Scorchers by nine wickets on Saturday in the Qualifier. Scorchers, batting first, lost wickets at regular intervals but ended strongly on 167/6 thanks to a brilliant 41-ball 69 by Josh Inglis. Josh Philippe scored a 28-ball 45 and shared a 92-run opening stand in only 8.5 overs with James Vince. The English batsman went on to smash an unbeaten 98 off 53 balls and missed his hundred by a whisker as the Sixers chased down the target in only 17 overs.

Sixers’ dominance over Scorchers:

4-1 – Sydney Sixers have won four of the five meetings in the BBL against the Perth Scorchers since the start of 2019-20 season. Sixers won all the three matches they played at the Canberra’s Manuka Oval in the BBL 2020-21 including two against the Scorchers.

Until the end of 2018-19 season, the Scorchers won 10 of the 14 meetings against the Sixers in the league which includes a Super over victory. Scorchers, in fact, won 9 out of 10 matches against Sixers in the BBL between the 2012-13 and 2017-18.

A big defeat for the Scorchers:

9 – Only the 2nd time Perth Scorchers won by a margin as big as nine wickets in the BBL. They went down against Brisbane Heat by nine wickets at the WACA in 2016-17 season while defending a target of 174. The 9-wicket win during SIX vs SCO game is also the joint-biggest win in terms of wickets for the Sydney Sixers who have won by 9 wickets on five occasions.

A record knock from Vince:

98* – The unbeaten 98 by James Vince is now the highest individual score for the Sydney Sixers in the history of Big Bash League. Vince went past Daniel Hughes’ 96-run knock also scored this season against the Melbourne Stars.

1034 – Runs James Vince has amassed in the BBL for Sydney Sixers; the 6th player with 1000+ BBL runs for the Sixers. Vince completed the milestone during SIX vs SCO game when he went past his individual score of 64.

Vince’s boundary bash:

14 – Number of fours by James Vince during the SIX vs SCO game; the 2nd most number of fours hit by any player in a Big Bash League game. Luke Pomersbach leads the list with 15 fours which he struck during his unbeaten 112 for Brisbane Heat against Melbourne Renegades in 2012-13 season.

Munro on top of Scorchers’ list:

441 – Colin Munro now has scored 441 runs in the BBL 2020-21 which are the most by any player for the Perth Scorchers in a BBL edition. Munro went past Liam Livingstone’s tally of 425 runs in the 2019-20 season.

A big season for Dwarshuis:

21 – Number of wickets for Ben Dwarshuis in BBL 2020-21; the most by any left-arm pacer in a BBL edition surpassing Josh Lalor’s 20 wickets in 2018-19 season. Dwarshuis’ tally of 21 wickets is also 3rd most for the Sixers in a BBL behind the 22 scalps apiece by Sean Abbott (2018-19) and Tom Curran (2019-20).

82 – Ben Dwarshuis has 82 wickets to his name in the BBL which are the most by any left-arm bowler in the league. Dwarshuis went past James Faulkner’s tally of 80 wickets with the two scalps during SIX vs SCO game.

Philippe breaks his own record:

499 – Josh Philippe’s 499 runs in BBL 2020-21 are the most for Sydney Sixers in a BBL season surpassing his own tally of 487 runs in 2019-20. James Vince became the 2nd player after Philippe to aggregate 400 runs in a BBL season for the Sixers as his current season aggregate reads 442 runs.
