BBL: Darren Lehmann appointed Brisbane Heat's head coach
Heat has won the title once under the watchful eyes of Lehmann.
The former Australia coach and player Darren Lehmann is set to return to the coaching duties with the Big Bash League (BBL) franchise Brisbane Heat. He will replace Daniel Vettori who resigned after yet another dismal season for the team in the recently concluded edition of the tournament. Lehmann is back in the mix after emotionally quitting the top job of the Australian national team last year in the wake of Cape Town ball-tampering scandal.
The incident took place in March last year after which the trio involved, Cameron Bancroft, Steve Smith and David Warner, were banned by Cricket Australia (CA) for a significant period of time. Though the board had given a clean chit to the coach Lehmann. But the man himself stepped down from the position mentioning the tough times he and his family had to go through during the period.
Lehmann’s second stint with Heat
Though the franchise is yet to confirm, the news of Darren Lehmann being appointed the coach of Brisbane Heat was confirmed by The Daily Telegraph. It is also understood that Lehmann edged out the Queensland coach Wade Seccombe for the top job and will be excited to return to the helm now albeit only for a T20 franchise. The 49-year-old, this summer, took up the commentary role for the Fox Sports Macquarie Sports Radio.
Interestingly, this will also be the second stint as a coach for him with the Brisbane Heat. The team had won its maiden title under him in BBL 2012-13 season. Heat had defeated or rather caused an upset by overcoming Perth Scorchers at the WACA in the final.
As far as Brisbane Heat is concerned, the team failed to qualify for the semi-finals this season and they also bid goodbye for their veteran and the Kiwi star Brendon McCullum.
