BCB stages an unprecedented drama with journalists while announcing Shakib Al Hasan's punishment
Shakib Al Hasan was banned for three matches and fined BDT 5 lakh.
Bangladesh Cricket was shocked, not for the first time, after watching the veteran cricketer Shakib Al Hasan‘s unruly behaviour on the field. The incident happened during a game between Mohammedan Sporting Club and Abahani Limited when Shakib lost his cool on the umpires twice and ended up kicking and uprooting the stumps in showing his dissent.
However, the 34-year-old regained his composure later and apologised to the fans and the officials as well as teams later. But that didn’t save him from the punishment as the cricket committee of Dhaka Metropolis (CCDM), along with BCB, decided to ban Shakib for three matches. He was also fined for BDT 5 lakh for violating the conduct of the tournament.
However, this wasn’t an end to all the episode. The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) staged an unprecedented drama over the announcement of the punishment according to United News of Bangladesh. At 6:15 PM, the media department of the board sent a message on WhatsApp stating that the press conference of CCDM Chairman Kazi Inam Ahmed will take place at 7:30 PM at Meena Bazar, Dhanmondi.
Press Conference message popped up after 37 minutes
Interestingly, at 6:52 PM, another message came from the same sender saying that the press conference has been cancelled. The message also read, “Any inconvenience is regretted.” After a few minutes, the conference ended up happening at the garage of the BCB President Nazmul Hasan in Gulshan. The venue was 8.5 kms away from Dhanmondi.
During this 37 minutes period, a few journalists had already left for Dhanmondi only to know midway that the presser was cancelled. And by the time they could understand anything, it was understood that it took place in Gulshan with no announcement whatsoever from BCB.
As far as Shakib Al Hasan is concerned, the cricketer will now miss the 8th, 9th and 10th round of the tournament following his poor behaviour on the field. The southpaw has returned to cricket only late last year after serving a 12-month ban from the ICC for not informing the officials about the corrupt approaches from bookies.
