BCCI aims to avoid player burnout by monitoring top 50 Indian players
This pool of players will reportedly be an all-encompassing list of top internationals, fringe players as well as domestic performers.
Considering the ever-increasing workload on the players with a packed international schedule and T20 league commitments the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has come up with a viable plan to even it out for the Indian cricketers. The BCCI is geared up to monitor the pressure on the top 50 cricketers in the country on a regular basis. This pool of players will reportedly be an all-encompassing list of top internationals, fringe players as well as domestic performers.
Out of the 50, there will be 27 centrally-contracted players while the remaining will be drafted in on the basis of their performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), which may include the likes of Rishabh Pant, Mayank Agarwal, Prithvi Shaw, Avesh Khan and Deepak Hooda. The process will essentially include the creation of a robust database that will keep a track of the workload and injury management of each player. Not only will this help the BCCI take decisions with regards to the team selections, but also to keep the cricketers fresh for big international assignments with rotation.
BCCI intent on monitoring player responsibilities
As quoted on Hindustan Times, a senior BCCI office-bearer commented, “Yes, the plan is there on the anvil. We want to create a database of 50 players. In those 50 players, 27 are our centrally contracted players (with Mohammed Shami re-inducted) and there will be another 23 players, who will be added to the list. These 23 players will be short-listed during the Indian Premier League.”
Reportedly, the blueprint for the system is being prepared and the national selection committee will be headed by MSK Prasad, who will have a major role in selecting the 23 players.
The official went on to elaborate on the psyche behind the procedure and added, “Starting from India’s tour of UK (which includes a short tour of Ireland), the national team is going to have enormous amount of workload till 2019 World Cup in England. Those who are performing, will have their workload monitored as well as the various parameters of their fitness levels checked. If they don’t attain required levels, they are not likely to be considered for India or India A teams. Physio Patrick Farhart will monitor them at the National Cricket Academy (NCA).”
