BCCI has done a great job in terms of putting a tournament of this scale together: ICC CEO on IPL 2020

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has been receiving a lot of compliments and congratulatory messages for the smooth conduction of the just-concluded 13th Indian Premier League (IPL 2020). The Indian board and other authorities have done a commendable job of putting up a marquee event like IPL together despite the challenges posed by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

After conducting IPL, BCCI is now looking forward to hosting the 2021 edition of the ICC T20 World Cup in October-November next year. Australia had to host the T20 World Cup this year, however, it will now host the T20 World Cup of 2022.

This would be the first time that BCCI will play a host for any ICC event after organising the 2016 T20 World Cup in India. While interacting with ESPNcricinfo, the chief executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Manu Sawhney reckoned that ICC is looking forward to learning from BCCI on how to conduct tournaments like IPL smoothly. He is also optimistic that things will become normal in India till the 2021 T20 World Cup and fans would be allowed in the stadiums.

“We’re really excited about taking the tournament back to India after 2016. We’re working really closely together with the BCCI to put a stellar tournament together – and most importantly, one that is safe and secure, and one that fans from across the globe can come and enjoy themselves,” ICC chief executive said.

“We’ve been looking at all the learnings we’ve had from various boards which have taken some cricket together right now, especially also the Dream11 IPL, which I think has done a great job in terms of putting a tournament of this scale together,” Manu added.

Jay Shah opines on hosting T20 World Cup in 2021

BCCI secretary Jay Shah also opined on hosting the marquee event next year. Shah stated that the board is determined on providing a rich experience to the ICC and all the other country players.

“The BCCI will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that the health and safety of everyone concerned in this showpiece event is taken care of. While we are determined to provide a rich cricket-viewing experience, I would also like to assure the ICC and member boards that India is known for its warm hospitality and we will make you feel at home,” Shah said

“In these times of pandemic when there are severe restrictions, the BCCI believes in the policy of innovating and adapting, and I am confident that we will overcome every challenge,” he concluded.
