BCCI: Match referees to play the role of selectors in the domestic season
The number selectors have been reduced from five to three.
Match referee is the one who keeps a close eye on the games and is responsible to monitor the happenings surrounding the matches. Meanwhile, they are the ones who watch the players closely and quite expectantly, they would be aware be of the attributes of a cricketer more than anyone else. Bearing this mind, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a major step.
The management is now looking for referees who can act as scouts so that the national selectors don’t miss out on any prodigious talent from the nation. The number of selectors had to be curtailed down to three from five as per the Supreme-court appointed Justice Lodha Committee. The step has presented difficulties to churn out talented cricketers.
The challenge for the BCCI
Recently, a top official of the BCCI updated the step for the development of Indian cricket. “At the moment, it has been decided that match referees will be mandated to provide feedback on player performance to help the national selectors,” the official was quoted as saying by The Times of India (TOI).
The spokesperson also spoke about the challenges even the experienced selectors are facing following the cut down on the selection committee. “Even the current general manager (cricket ops) Saba Karim, who was a selector in the last selection committee, felt that it is extremely difficult for even five selectors to effectively cover all domestic matches,” he added.
The BCCI is also planning to resort to a technology by the name of Online Database Monitoring System (ODMS) in order to keep a check on the workload and the fitness status of the domestic cricketers. “Reviving TRDO is still an idea. Nothing is concrete at the moment. The benefits of the wing is well documented as MS Dhoni himself came through this programme,” the source iterated.
