BCCI permits a 15-day stay for WAGs of Indian players but only 21 days after the start of World Cup
The report further suggests that this decision by the BCCI has already been approved without consulting skipper Kohli.
The accompaniment of wives and girlfriends of cricketers to tours has always been a matter that’s been in talks. Very recently, the BCCI had allowed permission to players and support staff to bring their families along on overseas tours. They were in fact permitted to stay throughout the entire span of these tours.
However, with the World Cup knocking on the door, the board has decided to inflict some changes in rules on this matter. WAGs of Indian cricketers will only be allowed to stay for 15 days in England and Wales, which is the hosting country for the upcoming showpiece event.
Moreover, this window of 15 days will be open only after the first 21 days of play in the World Cup has been carried out. Amongst the most regular appearances of the WAGs of Indian cricketers, is Anushka Sharma, the wife of Indian skipper Virat Kohli. Even for her, the stay wouldn’t last more than the span that has been fixated by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
“If Kohli’s wife Anushka Sharma wants to stay till the last phase of the tournament, she would have to plan it accordingly so that the 15-day window falls into the knockout games,” a source was quoted as saying by Times of India.
WAGs to miss the important games
The report further suggests that this decision by the BCCI has already been approved without consulting skipper Kohli, who has always expressed the need of families to be present, especially in the World Cup. The decision was made after a round of serious discussions. In fact, during the Australia tour, the officials had a tough time managing the 37-member band.
The dates are as such that the WAGs will not only miss India’s World Cup campaign opener against South Africa on June 5 but also the India-Pakistan game that is scheduled to be played on June 16, at Old Trafford in Manchester.
