BCCI set to appoint Vikram Rathour India A and U19 batting coach under controversial circumstances
He will also be the coach for the Rest of India in the Irani Cup.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is all set to add India’s former Test cricketer Vikram Rathour to the coaching staff of India A and U19 teams. He will be the batting coach for these teams but a controversy might just be around the corner. Vikram is a relative of the U19 national selector Ashish Kapoor and this appointment might lead to the conflict of interest.
It has been reported that the GM of Cricket Operations Saba Karim sought for the permission of the Committee of Administrators (CoA) chief Vinod Rai to add Rathour and wicket-keeping coach Vijay Yadav as the additional coaching staff albeit on a temporary basis.
“India A and U19 coach Rahul Dravid had specifically recommended two names — Rathour as batting coach and Vijay Yadav as fielding coach as additional staff for A team,” a senior BCCI official close to the developments was quoted as saying by Sportstar.
Rathour to be the ROI coach
According to the official Vikram Rathour will also be at the helm for the Rest of India (ROI) team in the upcoming Irani Trophy starting from February 12. The appointment is on a temporary basis and they will also work with U19 set up during Quadrangular series and also at the NCA. He (Rathour) will also be Rest of India coach in Irani Cup,” the official further said.
The same official further questioned the appointment and highlighted the problems which can arise following the appointment even as the names have been recommended by Rahul Dravid himself. “It is not Mr Rai’s duty to know who is related to whom. Did Karim intimate him about a potential conflict of interest situation? That’s the first question.
“The second question here is whether due diligence was followed by Karim while appointing Rathour and Yadav? Were proper interviews conducted on basis of advertisement on the board’s site? Last and final point is that if he will work on a temporary basis with U19s, and he is also supposed to work at the NCA as batting consultant, so does that mean a separate batting coach (for NCA) will be appointed later,” the official concluded.
