Indian pacer Mohammed Shami picked three wickets in the second innings of the second Test in Jamaica against West Indies, as India registered a 257-run win to wrap up the two-match series 2-0 and gained 120 points in the inaugural ICC Test championship. However, with his good news, Shami also received something bad from Kolkata court.

There was an arrest warrant issued by Alipore Court in Kolkata on September 3, after his estranged wife Hasin Jahan accused him and four members of his family of domestic violence and sexual assault and filed a case a year ago. The warrant also named his brother Hasid Ahmed as well and the duo has been given 15 days to surrender before the Alipore court and is expected to be arrested immediately.

BCCI to talk to Shami’s lawyer before deciding on any action on the bowler

“Yes, we do understand that an arrest warrant has been issued. But don’t really see us getting involved in this at this point in time. Once we see the charge sheet, we can decide how things stand and if the BCCI constitution calls for any action. But at this point in time, I would say it is too early to take a call on the matter,” A BCCI functionary was quoted saying by The Hindu after the warrant was issued.

Now it has come to light that the Indian board is going to consult with Shami’s lawyers in the course of next few days and mentioned that they are dependent on what his lawyers brief them about the case.

“We are aware of the situation and the first thing we are doing on Tuesday is to speak to Shami’s lawyer. We want to get a full update on the case. An official in BCCI has spoken to Shami before the start of the fourth day. We need to be prepared for any eventuality. At this point, we are dependent on whatever Shami’s lawyer briefs us. In a few days’ time, the selectors need to be apprised whether 28-year-old Shami is available for the South Africa Test series,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by the Hindu.

Shami has been in a legal battle with his wife for quite some time and his BCCI contract was put on hold for a brief period of time after being accused of domestic violence, infidelity, and match-fixing. However, the contract was restored after the cricketer was cleared of all charges in an inquiry conducted by the board. Shami is expected to be part of the 3-Test series against South Africa, which begins from October 2 in Visakhapatnam.
