BCCI’s ACSU rejects the discrimination claims of Sreesanth
The lifetime ban on Sreesanth was upheld by Kerala High Court last month.
The chief of the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit of BCCI, Neeraj Kumar has quashed the claims of S Sreesanth being singled out in the spot-fixing case. Kerala High Court, in the last month, banned the cricketer from playing cricket forever, after which he came out with the allegations that the Indian board was trying to save the top players who are still playing international cricket for their countries. However, Kumar has cleared that no such player is playing cricket at the top level.
Earlier, Sreesanth had come out hard on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for singling him out in the fixing saga which had rocked the cricketing fraternity in 2013. He had also questioned their approach towards some of the players from Chennai Super Kings (CSK) which gave the new twist to the controversy.
For us he is guilty
Neeraj Kumar clearly rejected the allegations of the banned pacer and confirmed that the corruption at the highest level has died down. “I don’t think there is any discrimination. Even the other banned players are also not playing international cricket. If they are playing at some local level where the BCCI doesn’t come into picture, we are not aware of it,” he said while talking to ANI.
“Sreesanth can plead that he is innocent, but according to us he is guilty. He can contest the charges as a citizen and it’s under judicial process so I can’t comment. I believe that corruption at the higher levels of tier ‘A’ games has completely died down,” he added. He also noted that they cannot control betting which happens in the backdrop but it could be a threat to the game if it tries to compromise players.
Betting is a different issue, it is punishable under gambling act. Most of the while it is not detected as it is very rampant. If the game is going on and some people are batting in the backdrop, it doesn’t affect the integrity of the game, but if they try to fix the outcome of the game by compromising with players then it is something we should take notice of,” Neeraj Kumar concluded.
