James Anderson will have to wait for his 500th victim, as Lord’s witnessed a new ace. England all-rounder Ben Stokes grabbed his best figures in Test match cricket- 6/22. West Indies went down without a fight, with the last six batsmen only adding 24 runs to the board. Jimmy scalped two wickets, is currently on 499 wickets.
At Tea, West Indies were struggling at 119/7, after Stokes blew away the visitors with three wickets in his 13 overs. He bowled an unplayable delivery to West Indies batsman Roston Chase, during the 44th over of the visitor’s inning. It looked like a leg-break, going into the off stump, with the batsman left square and dry. The Windies lost their sixth wicket then, with exact 100 on the board.
Jason Holder on the toss earlier at the start, and chose to bat. The decision completely backfired as West Indies were bowled out for 123, their second lowest total after opting to bat first in the first innings. A total of 14 wickets fell on Day 1 of the 3rd Test match, as the visitors came back hard, picking four English wickets before stumps.
Records broken at Lord’s on day 1
Stokes became the eighth player to feature on both the honors board at Lord’s. A hundred with the bat and then a six-for. He is the sixth Englishman to achieve this feat. He had earlier scored a hundred and scalped a five-for against New Zealand in the year 2015. His figures of 6/22 are his third six-for in Test match cricket. After 1984, this was the first time that English players have scalped two 6-wicket hauls at Lord’s. First, it was Moeen Ali against South Africa and now Stokes against West Indies. England ended the day at 46/4, with Stokes and Dawid Malan batting on 13. Holder and Kemar Roach has picked up 2 wickets each.
