With the Asia Cup 2023 right on the horizon, the continent’s biggest teams will be going head-to-head for the coveted title. Over the years, the Asia Cup has become one of the biggest fan favorites as the best Asian teams take each other on.
Despite the competition, we witnessed many matches that were won and lost by the barest of margins. However, there have been several instances where the Asia Cup saw a team completely dominate their opponents and register massive victories, and continuing upon the same, let us have a look at the biggest victories in an Asia Cup match across both formats.
Talking about the ODI format of the Asia Cup, the biggest win was recorded back in 1984 when India took on Sri Lanka. It was the second match of the competition when Sri Lanka were bundled out for just 96 runs in the first innings. From that point on, it was a cakewalk for the Indian team as Surinder Khanna and Ghulam Parkar’s unbeaten partnership helped them win the game by 10 wickets.
Furthermore, there have been two more occasions where a team has registered a 10-wicket victory in the ODI format of the Asia Cup. Once when Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh in 2004 and Pakistan defeated Bangladesh in 2008. These two victories were followed up by India and Sri Lanka’s 9-wicket win against Bangladesh in 1988.
Talking about the T20 format of the Asia Cup, the biggest victory recorded in the tournament came when India took on the UAE in 2016 in Mirpur. After the UAE only managed to score 81 runs in the first innings, India only lost one wicket during the run chase as they won the game by nine wickets.
Furthermore, second place in the list is occupied by India as well, when they defeated Bangladesh by eight wickets in 2016. Afghanistan are tied in second place with India as they defeated Sri Lanka by eight wickets in 2022.
