Billy Stanlake finds a bizarre way to get run-out against Sydney Thunder
The wicket also brought the curtains down on the match as the Strikers were bowled out for 97.
The match between Sydney Thunder and defending champions Adelaide Strikers at the Sydney Showground Stadium turned out to be a one-sided affair as the hosts won by 71 runs. The victory also took the Thunder, captained by Shane Watson, to the second position of the points table with four victories and as many defeats from eight matches. They are below Hobart Hurricanes.
The match was the first of Sunday’s tripleheader and despite being a drab affair, the match had its fair share of excitement. The Strikers batted second and one moment where number eleven Billy Stanlake got himself run out caught the attention. The incident took place in the fourth ball of the 17th over. Daniel Sams churned out a knee-high full toss and Stanlake turned the ball on the leg side.
Stanlake gets out in a comical manner
Subsequently, he set off for a single with all his might and on the first sight, he seemed to have made his ground. Chris Green, who was inside the circle, collected the leather and threw it in a flash to wicketkeeper John Lenton, who didn’t make any mistake in taking the bails off. Nevertheless, replays showed that Stanlake was actually out of his crease when the keeper dislodged the bails.
The keeper appealed and signalled something to the leg-umpire, who sent the decision upstairs. Replays showed that Stanlake’s bat jammed on the ground and then slipped out of his hands. The batsman tried to jump his way into the crease, but both his legs were in the air when the LED lights flashed. After making his ground, Billy stumbled and fell a few metres away from the stumps.
The wicket also brought the curtains down on the match as the Strikers were bowled out for 97 in 17.4 overs after the Thunder racked up 168 for the loss of six wickets courtesy of Watson’s knock of 68 from 40 balls with four boundaries and five sixes.
