Boxer Amir Khan mistakenly says ‘match-fixing’ on Pakistan’s chances in World Cup
Pakistan cricket has been marred by quite a few controversies.
Pakistan is currently taking part in the 2019 edition of the World Cup in England and Wales. Coming into the mega event, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Co weren’t deemed as one of the favourites as they aren’t in the best of forms in the 50-overs format. Previously, the Men in Green lost all their last 10 completed matches in the format. Pakistan also lost their first match versus the Windies by seven wickets.
Their next match is against England tomorrow at the Trent Bridge in Nottingham and Sarfaraz’s men would be keen to make a comeback. Their marquee clash against India on June 16 at the Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. In the meantime, Amir Khan, a British-Pakistani boxer, who won a silver medal in the 2004 Olympics at the age of 17, was asked about Pakistan’s chances in the tournament.

However, he made a horrendous mistake while opining on the matter. The 32-year-old started saying that all the ten teams have an equal chance of going all the way in the extravaganza. Thereafter, he had a slip of tongue and mistakenly told ‘match-fixing’. “Any team in the World Cup has a great chance. It just depends on the draw, depends on the match-fixing,” Amir was quoted as saying.
Nevertheless, he realised his mistake and rectified his previous words. “On the matches, how they fix the games. I just feel with cricket being a difficult sport, if you are starting very badly, then it’s hard to get your points back. What Pakistan has to do in my opinion is to start very strong early,” he mentioned.
Pakistan cricket has been marred by match-fixing and spot-fixing scandals on the number of instances. Back in 2010, Mohammad Amir, Salman Butt and Mohammad Asif were found guilty of spot-fixing at the Lord’s Cricket Ground during a Test match. The trio was subsequently banned from international cricket.
Even as Amir made a comeback and is presently a part of the Pakistan squad in the World Cup, Asif and Butt couldn’t quite foray back into international cricket. There were also a lot of controversies, surrounding match-fixing in the PSL, Pakistan’s domestic T20 extravaganza.
