Brian Lara picks two batsmen who can break his highest Test score of 400*

Former West Indies batsman Brian Lara is widely considered to be one of the all-time greatest batsmen the cricket has seen and perhaps the most complete left-hander to play the game. Making his Test debut in 1990, Lara went onto achieve greatness showing his penchant for huge scores and batting for a long time, given his first hundred was 277 against Australia at SCG in 1993.

Brian Lara achieved historical status when he hit a brilliant 375 against England in 1994 in Antigua to break the record of the highest Test score by a batsman, previously held by legendary Sir Gary Sobers. Sobers was present at the ground when Lara hit a four to break the record and congratulated him mid-pitch.

Matthew Hayden hit 380 against Zimbabwe in 2003 to claim the record and kept it for a couple of months, before Brian Lara became the first and thus far only batsman to reclaim this record, with his world record 400* against England at the same ground in Antigua a decade apart. This remains a record, but it was threatened recently by Australia’s David Warner when he made 335* against Pakistan in the Adelaide Test match.

Brian Lara feels Rohit Sharma and Prithvi Shaw might break his record

Brian Lara wanted to congratulate David Warner if he had broken his record in Adelaide, but Tim Paine realized that his team had scored more than enough and declared the innings with 589 runs on the board. He said the records are meant to be broken and he had hoped Paine would have let Warner have a go instead of declaring, as it is apter when done by attacking and entertaining players.

Apart from Warner, Lara feels Indian pair of Rohit Sharma and Prithvi Shaw are two other contenders who may one day break his record of 400, the highest Test score by a batsman. “A guy like Rohit Sharma who you know you wonder if he’s still a Test cricketer or not.

“If he gets going on a good day, on his day, on a good pitch, right situation he can do it. It will need an attacking option. I know he’s fell off the radar a little bit, Prithvi Shaw was one of those attacking options. Hey, here’s a 19-year-old who has the world in front of him, hopefully, he can come back soon,” he was quoted as saying by News Corp.

Brian Lara felt Shaw will make a comeback into the team despite falling off the radar owing to injuries and being banned after failing a drug test.
