Bumrah’s pace and accuracy makes him a serious threat irrespective of formats, says Pat Cummins
"Two of the basics he does really well is that he bowls fast and he bowls accurately." - Pat Cummins.
Even though India failed to secure a win in their first T20I against Australia in Visakhapatnam on Sunday despite a lionhearted show by their bowlers, Jasprit Bumrah received special applause for his show in the match. The skiddy pacer, who played his first limited-over game of the year after a break, picked three wickets for 16 runs and tightened the noose around the Aussies in the penultimate over to almost winning the game for India. The other pace, Umesh Yadav, leaked 14 runs in the final over to see the visitors taking a 1-0 lead.
Bumrah has come under applause from all quarters since his stellar performance with even the Australians showering praise. He became a prime subject of discussion when India were playing Australia in the recent Test series Down Under with many former greats from the home country praising him whole-heartedly. Bumrah was the pick of the Indian bowlers with 21 scalps in that series that saw him finish his first year in Test cricket on a grand note.
Now, he is receiving similar accolades for his show in the limited-over cricket as well. After a couple of Australian players, including the captain of the visiting side Aaron Finch, called him the best death bowler in the world, in-form Australian pacer Pat Cummins said Bumrah’s pace and accuracy have made him a serious threat irrespective of the formats. In just over three years in international cricket, the 25-year-old has already picked up 178 wickets.
Cummins himself is in a great form with the ball and also chips in with useful contributions with the bat when required. He maintained his composure in the dying moments of the game in Vizag to see Australia home by hitting a four and a couple in the final two balls.
‘Bumrah a class act’
“He is obviously a class act. Two of the basics he does really well is that he bowls fast and he bowls accurately. Anyone who does that in world cricket will pose a real challenge for the batsmen. He has got a great slower ball, seems to have a great cricketing brain, executes his skills really well,” India Today cited reports as quoting Cummins about Bumrah who took India very close to victory despite the hosts’ batting line-up proving to be a disappointment.
