Two cricketing superpowers India and Australia are involved in the first pink-ball game of the four-match Border Gavaskar Trophy at Adelaide Oval. It was an exciting day for all-rounder Cameron Green as he earned his debut Test cap from pacer Pat Cummins after a splendid show in the warm-up game against India A and in the domestic circuit.
Ahead of the marquee game, the former Australian captain Allan Border hilariously trolled the veteran Australian fast bowler Glenn McGrath while interacting with cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle and former Indian batsman Sanjay Manjrekar. Border was all praises for the debutant Green as he opined that he has a lot of potential to excel.
The former captain believes that Cameron Green bat’s like legendary Ricky Ponting and is a quality youngster who can do wonders for the team. Further he sledged the pacer McGrath’s bowling speed, who used to bowl medium pace, and said Green is probably 10 kmph quicker than him.
Allan Border showers praises on youngster Cameron Green
“He’s an exciting young talent. What I like about him is that he as backed his potential with performance. He’s been scoring lots of runs in Sheffield Shield,” Border said on Sony Sports Network. “Lot of people have said that he’s the best they’ve seen since Ricky Ponting. You went to the academy with Ponting, so you know what a quality youngster he was and turned out to be one of the greats of the game.
“So if Green is anywhere near that then we have found a really good cricketer then you throw in the fact he’s around 6 foot 6 and bowls a heavy ball. He’s probably around 10 ks quicker than you pidgy! (McGrath’s nickname), bowls around 140. So he’s a real deal, don’t worry about that,” added Border.
This statement by Allan Border left Harsha Bhogle and Sanjay Manjrekar in splits while McGrath also took the banter sportingly. Harsha made his contribution in this interaction saying, “That is a proper sledge.” As far as the match is concerned, Australia had an edge against India at the end of Day 1 as their bowlers managed to restrict the opposition batters to a score of 233/6.
