Former Australian batsman Cameron White survived a perilous beamer from fellow countryman Billy Stanlake in Townsville on Sunday. White, representing Victoria in the ongoing JLT One-Day Cup, instantly went down on the ground when the ball struck his helmet on the full. The batsman, fortunately, survived the scare and was allowed to remain at the crease after a thorough inspection by the physio.

Standing at 6ft 8in, Billy Stanlake is known for his vicious pace and bounce. He exhibited his ability to rush batsmen on numerous occasions, most recently during the 2018 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). With deliveries clocking up to 150kmph, Stanlake was instrumental in the Sunrisers’ run to this year’s IPL final.

The speedster had already conceded 20 runs in his first two overs when he was brought back into the attack by Queensland skipper Chris Lynn. White had only played 5 deliveries before he faced the brunt of Stanlake’s nasty beamer. The commentators themselves were shocked at what they witnessed, exclaiming, “It was certainly dangerous.”

Although White was cleared to continue batting, the blow seemed to have a marked effect on his ability to score. He struggled at the crease, finding himself at 10 off 35. White was eventually dismissed after attempting to pull Jack Wildermuth. Lynn made no mistake with the catch, leaving Victoria in a spot of bother at 66 for 4.

However, Glenn Maxwell stitched together a 101-run partnership with Nic Maddinson to ensure Victoria had a fighting total on the board. Maxwell’s 80 was the highest individual score in the game, which could now push selectors to reconsider his position after they dropped him for the upcoming series against Pakistan.

Chasing 241 in 50 overs, Queensland were bundled out for 227. Will Sutherland did the bulk of the damage for Victoria. He finished with figures of 5 for 45 in his quota of 10 overs, and also bagged the man of the match award.
