Canada all set to join the T20 craze with ‘Global T20 Canada’
The tournament will follow a draft system to fill the six franchises
Franchise based T20 tournaments have become the order of the day in cricket, in the shortest format. It seems as though every country is coming up with a T20 league of its own and the workload on players is mounting day by day. The already busy schedule of players is getting tighter day by day with the introduction of new leagues. Players want to take part in more and more tournaments around the world to get recognized and increase their value.
Canada has become the latest entrant to the group of franchise-based T20 tournaments. Canada’s cricket board, along with Chennai-based Mercuri Group have come up with ‘Global T20 Canada’ which is all set to be the premier T20 tournament in the country. The inaugural season of the tournament will feature six franchises and it wins begin on June 28, 2018.
IPL-like playoffs
“Each team will play six games in the league phase: an initial round-robin followed by a single-match second round in which the teams will play one other opponent. The top four teams after the league phase advance to the playoffs beginning on July 12,” a report by ESPNCricinfo stated.
The knockout stages will be similar to that of IPL where top two teams will play the first playoff and the winner will proceed to the final. The losing side will then play the winner of the second playoff between the third and fourth-placed side, with the winner of this encounter also making the final.
The matches will be held at the Maple leaf Cricket Club. There will be a formal draft system to decide the player distribution among the six teams. Caribbean All-Stars, Toronto Nationals, Montreal Tigers, Ottawa Royals, Vancouver Knights and Winnipeg Hawks are the six franchises that will be taking part in the tournament. A minimum of four Canadian players must be drafted into each squad. The decision on foreign players is yet to be taken by the management.
