Joe Root dropped a major bombshell on Friday (April 15) as he stepped down as England’s Test captain. Time and again, the prolific batter had asserted that he was the right man to take English cricket forward. However, he has now taken a different decision and brought down curtains to his stint as the England skipper. Needless to mention, social media was flooded with a flurry of reactions with fans from all over the world expressing their views.

Iceland Cricket, who are known for their witty and hilarious remarks on social media, also came up with a cheeky tweet. They apparently took a dig at England’s Test team and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) amid the national team’s poor run in the purest format of the game. Notably, the Three Lions have won just one of their last 17 Tests.

Iceland Cricket takes a jibe at England’s horror runs in Tests

During this period, England suffered Test series defeats at the hands of New Zealand, Australia and West Indies. Referring to the same, Iceland Cricket posted a false job vacancy for the position of England’s next Test captaincy.

They listed the following as “experience needed”: “Handling a ‘workforce’ with low productivity, Propaganda skills – interpreting disaster as triumphs, Capacity to inspire hope in staff, Media relations, Willingness to travel widely, A few runs and/or wickets now and again.”

Meanwhile, Root, in an official statement issued by the ECB, stated he took the decision after discussions with family members and close ones. He, however, also made it crystal clear that he’ll continue to serve the national team as a batter.

“After returning from the Caribbean tour and having time to reflect, I have decided to step down as England Men’s Test captain. It has been the most challenging decision I have had to make in my career but having discussed this with my family and those closest to me; I know the timing is right,” said Root.
