Champions Trophy: Player of the Tournament winners

Champions Trophy has seen a lot of great players fail miserably. However, it has boosted some careers as well. There were players who have had a liking for the tournament. The tournament is actually not easy to perform as it is short and does not give you time to settle. However, there have been some amazing performances over the years. These performances have seen the players make it big in international cricket. Since the inception of the Champions Trophy, there have been several players who have outperformed every other player to grab the Player of the Tournament award. Today, we are going to look at each and every one of them since the Champions Trophy began in 1998. Here we go. #1 Jacques Kallis (South Africa) – 1998 Jacques Kallis. (Photo Source: Zimbio) Jacques Kallis is one of the greatest players in the history of cricket. He is one of those rare all-rounders who has had a huge career with both bat and ball. However, it was this tournament that brought Jacques into the limelight. This being the only ICC Trophy of South Africa, it is even more special. Jacques did what an all-rounder should do in that tournament. He was the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 8 wickets and batted beautifully to score 164 runs at an average of 82 which included a century against the then World Champions Sri Lanka. #2 Ramnaresh Sarwan (West Indies) – 2004 Ramnaresh Sarwan. (Photo Source: Getty Images) Ramnaresh Sarwan was a player of the West Indies when they were one of the major teams in world cricket. He was a very good young prospect and lived up to his potential. He was fantastic in the Champions Trophy of 2004 where they won the tournament against all the odds. Sarwan was fantastic with the bat for them then. He scored 166 runs at an average of 83. He also got 2 Man of the Match awards which eventually led to the Man of the Tournament award. His knock of 75 against South Africa was also an excellent one which laid the foundation for the rest of the tournament. #3 Chris Gayle (West Indies) – 2006 Chris Gayle. (Photo Source: AFP) Chris Gayle is a world beater. He has the ability to win the game single handedly and he was on fire in 2006. Still new to international cricket, Chris Gayle was nerveless and scored at a brisk rate. West Indies reached the finals of the tournament once again only to succumb to Australia. Gayle scored a total of 474 runs in the tournament at an average of 92.94. Chris smashed 3 centuries in the process and announced himself on the world stage. He was the player to watch out for West Indies ever since and has played some magnificent knocks for them over the years as well. #4 Ricky Ponting (Australia) – 2009 Ricky Ponting. (© Getty Images) Ricky Ponting is Australia’s most successful captain. He had a team of champions to lead and was one of the greatest leaders in the game. He has won all the honors there are to win in the cricketing world. Ricky Ponting led his team to another Champions Trophy in 2009 as they successfully defended their title. Ponting scored 288 runs in the tournament hitting one century and averaged 72. The way he led his team in that tournament was also fantastic. He had some great players in his team then and Ponting was still peaking at the right times for his team. Ponting was already a legend as he had led Australia to back to back World Cup and Champions Trophy wins. #5 Shikhar Dhawan (India) – 2013 Shikhar Dhawan of India. (Photo by Clive Rose/Getty Images) India scripted a great win in 2013 by going unbeaten in the tournament. Shikhar Dhawan was one of the main reasons they won the Champions Trophy that year as he scored quite a few runs up front. Dhawan is a fearless cricketer and he showed his class in 2013. The left-hander scored 363 runs in 5 games at an average of 90. His strike was 101 which is impressive in One Day cricket. Dhawan also scored 2 centuries in the tournament making him the obvious choice for the player of the tournament award. He has been in and out of the team since then but outperformed every batter in this year’s Champions Trophy as well. #6 Hasan Ali (Pakistan) – 2017 Pakistan’s Hasan Ali. He has had a positive impact on the team and helped them win the Champions Trophy. Hasan Ali is new to international cricket but this tournament has made him a winner already. Ali picked up 13 wickets in the tournament. After going for runs in the first game, he backed himself and upped his game in the next matches. He picked up a wicket every 14 balls and had a great economy of 4.29. He also bagged himself 2 man of the match awards which made him the player of the tournament. His performances in the semis and the finals were fantastic as well.
