Queensland wicketkeeper Chris Hartley completed the 500th catch of his career. The veteran skipper became the first person to achieve this feat in the Sheffield Shield.

Chris Hartley took to the Gabba, requiring just 3 catches to surpass Victorian player Darren Berry’s previous record of 499 catches. The first dismissal removed former Aussie skipper George Bailey for a 14-ball duck. Hartley equaled Berry’s record when teenage batsman Jake Doran nicked an outswinger from James Hopes.

Hartley, however, had to wait till the second innings to complete the feat. This time, Hartley dismissed George Bailey once again with a superb catch as he dived away to his left. The wicket gave Hartley his 500th catch and 514th catch in overall Shield competitions. Hartley is still trailing Berry’s record of 546 dismissals in overall Shield cricket.

Berry took to social media before the match to pass on his best wishes. “Good luck Harts … fantastic servant for Queensland,’’ Berry tweeted. “Every record is made to be broken.’’

Earlier in the summer, Chris Hartley became Queensland’s most prolific keeper after he surpassed former Queenslander Wade Seccombe to claim the state’s top catching record.

The match proved to be extremely productive for Hartley as he also scored a decent 68 in the first innings total of 376.
