Confusion over Virat Kohli inclusion for the T20Is against Ireland
Surrey had earlier announced Virat Kohli’s availability in the county season for the entire June
Recently, Surrey Cricket confirmed their latest signing in the form of Virat Kohli for the month of June. This meant that he was going to miss the one-off test against Afghanistan at his IPL home ground. However, he has been named the captain for the T20 international series against Ireland starting from the 27th of June.
This has created a stir of confusion since Virat Kohli is supposed to fulfil his commitments for Surrey during that period. He is scheduled to play his last county match between 25th to 28th June. Surrey had earlier announced Virat Kohli’s availability in the county season for the entire June.
Even the board didn’t give a proper statement regarding the same. When the chairman of the selection committee, MSK Prasad was confronted about whether it was a mistake on their part, he remarked, “Kindly talk to the BCCI secretary on this issue.” However, BCCI secretary Amitabh Choudhary assured that everything was fine.
There is still a lot of suspension around the same if Kohli will be available for the T20 international series. He may well end up playing just two county games spanning four days if asked to play against Ireland. So far, it was being assumed that he would be missing the Ireland series as well.
If the selectors have picked him, it means he will play the T20Is
A BCCI official told that if the selectors had picked him, he will play against Ireland. This also means that he will miss the game against Yorkshire which will be clashing with the T20 Internationals. However, he too was clueless about the reason and asserted that it would be interesting to see Kohli’s decision.
“If the selectors have picked him for the Ireland T20s despite the county dates being available, it means that he will not play the game against Yorkshire. This cannot be a unilateral decision as the county contracts have been inked after much deliberation. Playing against Ireland means that he will get only two county games. It will be very interesting to know why has there been a change in Virat’s schedule if England Tests are paramount,” a BCCI official was quoted as saying by Sportskeeda.
