The Jamaica Tallawahs might not have found their feet in the 2020 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), but there’s no stopping Mujeeb Ur Rahman. The Afghanistan tweaker has been hard to get away for the best in the business. In four matches thus far, the young off-spinner has nine wickets at a stupendous economy rate and strike-rate of 4.18 and 10.6 respectively.

Apart from bamboozling batters with his ability to get sharp turn, Mujeeb can also surprise them with his faster deliveries. Once such incident happened in the Tallawahs’ match against the Guyana Amazon Warriors at the Brian Lara Stadium, Tarouba in Trinidad. The batsman at the other end was Shimron Hetmyer, who was yet to even face a ball after coming to the crease.

Mujeeb weaves magic

Mujeeb was brimming with confidence after he cleaned up Brandon King, who was looking dangerous after scoring 29 at a strike-rate of 152.63. To Hetmyer, Mujeeb bowled around the wicket and fired it with no intention of extracting turn off the surface. The ball pitched on and around the off-stump and Hetmyer tried to cut it away through the off side field.

But the left-hander was clearly beaten by the pace and the leather cannoned into the stumps. Mujeeb’s joy knew no bounds as he found himself on the verge of a hat-trick. The Warriors would be disappointed as King and Chandrapaul Hemraj had amassed a partnership of 56 runs off 32 balls. Mujeeb’s spell, well and truly, pegged back the 2019 runners-up of the T20 league.

In the match, Mujeeb also picked up Nicholas Pooran’s wicket and finished with a spell of 4-0-18-3. However, the Tallawahs went on to lose the match by 14 runs. They had managed to restrict the Warriors for a mere 118 in 19.1 overs. But in the run-chase, they crumbled.

Andre Russell’s valiant 37-ball 52 couldn’t take the Tallawahs over the finishing line. For the Warriors, each and every bowler picked up at least a wicket. Skipper Chris Green was the standout as he dismissed Chadwick Walton and Nkrumah Bonner, ending with a spell of 3-1-10-2.
