CPL brings forth law to penalise teams for slow over rates

The 2018 edition of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) is set to take place from August 8 (Local Time). Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR), the defending champions, and St Lucia Stars, who couldn’t win a single match last season will lock horns in the first encounter at Queens Sports Park in Trinidad. The event consists of 34 matches to be contested between six participating nations over approximately seven weeks.

Recently, the tournament authorities have introduced a new rule after which the teams are expected to walk a tightrope. As per the new introductions and regulations, teams are provided with a maximum of 85 minutes in order to complete an innings. In certain situations, they may also get additional time allotted by the umpires apart from the stipulated time period as per reports in ESPNcricinfo.

If a team fails to complete the same within the given time period, then 0.05 points will be deducted from their Net Run Rate (NRR). For every additional over bowled, teams will be slapped with a deduction of 0.10 points from their NRR. In the meantime, Michael Hall, the operation director of CPL, talked about making the event fair besides delivering entertainment to the audience.

“We work hard each year to ensure that playing conditions are making the competition as fair as possible while also keeping the spectators and viewers at home entertained. We feel both of these changes will help with both of these goals,” Hall mentioned.

It has often been seen that teams get eliminated on the basis of net run rate and hence it holds prime significance as far as qualifying for the next rounds are concerned. After the amendment, teams definitely will be more disciplined and planned. Apart from the law, they also have introduced ‘toss’ in the super over as to decide the team batting first in case of a one-over eliminator.
