Craig Overton bowls a beauty to dismiss Australia's Tim Paine
The swinging delivery from the bowler took the peg for a walk, as Australia continued their struggle in the first warm-up game.
The first match of the Ashes 2017-18 tour between Cricket Australia XI and the visiting English side got off to a slow start with Alastair Cook and Mark Stoneman getting used to the conditions in Australia. Jack Coleman was the first to strike in the match, getting the English opener Cook to edge one to the wicketkeeper, Tim Paine. James Vince and Stoneman build a good partnership before a delivery from Daniel Fallings dismissed the former.
At 85/2, it was a decent start for the visitors and the succeeding partnership between Stoneman and James Vince led to 150 runs for the visitors. At the end of the first innings, the English side managed to scrape past 293 batting a total of 95 overs, with Daniel Fallings picking up five wickets for the home side.
In reply, Australia never got off to the desired start. Cricket Australia XI’s opener Nick Larkin was struck in front of the stump by a swinging delivery from Chris Woakes before Jake Ball dismissed Ryan Gibson.
Craig Overton then took the wicket of Jake Carder before Paine, and Matthew Short stitched a good partnership. Simon Milenko too added to the score and helped them reduce the deficit. The hosts ended the first innings, declaring at 233 runs for the loss of nine wickets.
The wicket
However, the most interesting delivery of the entire match was bowled in the second innings with Cricket Australia XI chasing a seemingly impossible target to win. Needing 268, the home side got off to the worst of starts at 7/3 with Chris Woakes picking up all the three wickets.
Craig Overton’s bowling from the other end was impressive too. The right-arm quick who plies his trade for Somerset in domestic cricket bowled a beauty of an in-swinger to the Cricket Australia skipper Tim Paine. The right-handed batsman did not have any clue, where the ball would swing. It took the peg for a walk, as Australia continued their struggle in the first warm-up game of the tour.
