Chennai Super Kings ended the tournament in the fifth spot. The defending champions were all set to qualify for the playoffs at one stage of the league, but suffered injuries and lost the must-win game to RCB which affected their net run rate. CSK had batting contributions mostly from their skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad and Shivam Dube. Other batters were not consistent and had a negative impact at times.

The fact that MS Dhoni batted mostly for a few overs in the last few overs of matches meant that CSK was nearly a batter short. In fact, the likes of Mitchell Santner and Shardul Thakur batted above him in a few games. There were many such mistakes made by CSK including some of the questionable selection of players. While some played a lot despite not doing well, others played only a few games despite doing well.

Here are the three players underutilized by CSK in IPL 2024 -

Mitchell Santner

For a player as capable as Mitchell Santner, CSK gave him an opportunity for just three matches. He bowled well in those matches, claiming two wickets at an economy rate of just 7.11. With his spell, Santner won the match for CSK against PBKS. The fact that CSK played with two overseas pacers Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana meant Santner was not a starter in the XI.

Moeen Ali got a chance to play for CSK in just eight matches. For someone like him who can be handy both as a batter and as a bowler, it was way below par. As a batter, he scored 128 runs in five innings with some crucial cameos batting out of his position. As a bowler, he claimed two wickets in four innings at an economy rate of 8.87. At his best, Moeen can win matches on his own.

Maheesh Theekshana

Maheesh Theekshana was a good economical bowler, but did not get many chances to play for CSK. Due to the pace bowling combo of Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana, the Sri Lankan spinner did not get many opportunities. The unorthodox spinner played five games and claimed two wickets at an economy rate of just 7.20, which is brilliant for a bowler this season.
