IPL 2024: 5 most expensive players' performances after first game

The 17th edition of the Indian Premier League 2024 got underway with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) taking on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chepauk on Friday, March 22. The IPL 2024 auction went overseas for the first time as it was held at the Coca Cola Arena in Dubai on December 19, 2023. Alzarri Joseph, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (INR 11.50 crore) The West Indies pacer was roped in by RCB for INR 11.50 crore at the IPL 2024 auction. Alzarri has been playing on the international circuit since 2016 and has the ability to bowl at great speeds. He also registered the best bowling figures (6/12 versus Sunrisers Hyderabad) for a bowler in IPL history in 2019 when he was playing for the Mumbai Indians. However, he has the tendency to go for runs and his economy rate of 9.26 in 20 IPL matches accentuates the same. After RCB posted 173/6 in their 20 overs, Alzarri was brought in as the first-change bowler in the fifth over. He started his career at the Bengaluru-based franchise by conceding a six against Rachin Ravindra. He conceded 11 runs off that over. In the end, he finished with figures of 0/38 in 3.4 overs as CSK won by six wickets with eight balls to spare. 4. Harshal Patel, Punjab Kings (INR 11.75 crore) Punjab Kings (PBKS) had a formidable pace attack on paper last season as they had the likes of Kagiso Rabada, Arshdeep Singh, Sam Curran, and Nathan Ellis in their ranks. However, except for the Aussie speedster, no one could make much of an impact. The management bolstered their bowling department by adding Harshal Patel to their squad, bagging him for INR 11.75 crore at the auction. The discarded India pacer played in the second match of IPL 2024 between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur in Chandigarh. After PBKS won the toss and opted to bowl first, Harshal bowled well in his first three overs and picked up two wickets at the cost of 22 runs. However, in his final over, which was also the last over of the innings, the right-arm seamer was taken to the cleaners by the 21-year-old Impact Player Abhishek Porel. The wicketkeeper-batter smashed three fours and two sixes in an over which yielded 25 runs. DC finished on 174/9 before the home side won the encounter with four wickets and as many balls to spare. During the auction, he became a hot property as multiple teams tried to rope him in. However, the defending champions prevailed in the end, securing Mitchell's services for INR 14 crore. In the match between CSK and RCB, Mitchell came out to bat at No. 4 after his compatriot Rachin Ravindra had helped the Men in Yellow get to 71 in just seven overs. The right-handed batter hit a couple of sixes during his innings of 22 off 18 balls. Pat Cummins, Sunrisers Hyderabad (INR 20.50 crore) The Australian captain in Tests and ODIs joined the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for a whopping INR 20.50 crore. He became the most expensive player in IPL history for a brief while during the auction. Before the start of the season, Cummins was appointed as the captain of the Sunrisers, replacing Aiden Markram. On Saturday, March 23, he was in action at the Eden Gardens as SRH faced two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). After winning the toss and opting to bowl first, Cummins introduced himself into the attack in the fifth over and conceded just seven runs. He came back to bowl the ninth over and went for 11 runs. The right-arm pacer eventually finished with figures of 1/32 in his four overs as KKR posted a mammoth 208/7 in their 20 overs. Pat Cummins, who is a capable batter, came out to the crease with his team needing five runs off the last ball. He swung hard but failed to connect a slower ball from Harshit Rana as the hosts won by four runs. 1. Mitchell Starc, Kolkata Knight Riders (INR 24.75 crore) Mitchell Starc The left-arm pacer went to KKR for a mind-boggling INR 24.75 crore at the IPL 2024 auction. He replaced Cummins to become the most expensive player in IPL auction history. Like Cummins, Starc was also in action on Saturday in the KKR versus SRH clash. Mitchell Starc had a great start to his time with the Knight Riders as he hit his first ball for a boundary, batting at No. 9. He finished unbeaten on six runs from three balls. The 34-year-old, however, was quite disappointing with the ball as he finished wicketless in his four overs and conceded 53 runs. He bowled the penultimate over and went for 26 runs and it entirely changed the complexion of the match. However, Harshit held his nerve in the last over and gave KKR a thrilling win.
