IPL 2024: Top 10 best bowlers of the season

The 17th edition of the IPL 2024 turned out to be a nightmare for the majority of the bowlers. The 200+ scores weren't uncommon, and some teams crossed scores of 220 or more consistently. For the first time in the history of the league, more than 7 instances of 240+ scores were registered in a single edition. The pitches were flat and not didn't have much to offer for the bowlers for the majority of the tournament. However, the bowlers returned well in the last 20 matches with impressive performances. With the wickets slowing down, batting inevitably became a bit difficult. However, for the most part, the bowlers struggled to be in the game. Yet, a few bowlers did extremely well for their side and made a name for themselves. Most of them were wicket-taking bowlers and a few were economical. Not many managed to do both. Meanwhile, here are the top 10 best bowlers of the season: Harshal Patel Harshal Patel emerged as the leading wicket-taker of the 17th edition, getting his hands on the prestigious Purple Cap for a rare second time in the league's history. The experienced pacer claimed 24 wickets and averaged well under 20. The seamer was particularly well at the death, and controlled the economy single-handedly on many instances. Although Punjab Kings couldn't make it to the Playoffs, it was Harshal Patel who was the brightest shining star for them, justifying his pricey pick at the auction. Trent Boult Known for picking wickets from the get-go, Trent Boult stood by his reputation in this season as well. The Kiwi pacer bowled exceptionally well in some games, and his ability to take early wickets was one of the main reasons Rajasthan Royals made it to the top four. Throughout the 17th edition, Boult claimed 16 wickets at an impressive economy of 8.30. His best of 3/22 also saw him Player of the Match. T Natarajan T Natarajan was one of the best death bowlers of the season. The Sunrisers Hyderabad pacer executed his line and lengths to precision, and enabled to contain crucial runs. Natarajan also emerged as the highest wicket-taker for his side, and played a pivotal role in seeing the franchise through to the finals against Kolkata Knight Riders. Although, SRH were runner-ups of the tournament, the lefty pacer picked 19 wickets, averaging 24.47 with his economy also remaining at a decent 9.05 at the end. Harshit Rana Harshit Rana made headlines for a lot of controversies in the 2024 season, however, the pacer also made sure he didn't disappoint with his designated role for the title-winners KKR. The youngster picked 19 wickets in just 11 innings, and played a crucial part to help Knight Riders lift the coveted trophy for third time. Rana's economy stood at 9.08, and shone with an average of 20.15. Pat Cummins Pat Cummins was roped in by SRH for a record price of an enormous INR 20.50 crore, and the Australian all-rounder didn't disappoint. Acting as their skipper, Cummins also ensured to display stellar outings on individual front, which eventually contributed in team wins. Taking 18 wickets in 16 matches, the star cricketer was also the second-highest wicket-taker for the Hyderabad-based franchise in the 2024 edition. Varun Chakravarthy One of the rare spinners in this list is the leg-spin bowler from KKR, Varun Chakravarthy. The Tamil Nadu-born cricketer returned to form in 2024 after a mediocre outing in the previous season. In just 14 innings, Chakravarthy grabbed 21 wickets and had one of the best averages of the season. The KKR spinner also was the highest wicket-taker for the winners, and second-highest overall, only behind Punjab's Patel. Kuldeep Yadav Kuldeep Yadav had been in exceptional form coming into the IPL 2024, and after a successful international season, the spinner came to Delhi Capitals' services with his best. In 11 matches, the left-arm unorthodox spinner and produced some magical spells even when conditions didn't favour the bowlers. Although DC missed out on qualification, Kuldeep's bowling was one of the positive takeaways for the franchise. Andre Russell Andre Russell, who is usually known for parking the ball out of the park with his batting, is a handy bowler as well. This year for KKR, the star all-rounder contributed majorly with his right-arm pace, which won a lot of games for the champions. Although his economy was in excess of 10 an over, the Caribbean cricketer scalped 19 wickets and broke several partnerships to stage a show for his long-standing association with the Knight Riders. Sunil Narine Sunil Narine, the fellow Caribbean all-rounder of Russell, contributed in many ways apart from his exceptional bowling skills. While pacers held the majority in share of wickets, the experienced all-rounder proved his worth and how he could turn the match on its head at will. While Narine took 17 wickets, it was his miser economy of just 6.69 that worked wonders for the reigning champions. Jasprit Bumrah Mumbai Indians were nowhere close to their potential in the 2024 edition, but it was Jasprit Bumrah who delivered usual magic with the ball. Despite the five-time champions ending the campaign at the bottom of the points table, Bumrah performed well with 20 wickets in 13 games, and also picked a fifer.
