Delhi Capitals (DC) have never won any Indian Premier League (IPL) title after playing 16 seasons. Under Rishabh Pant’s captaincy, DC will look to create history, lifting the coveted trophy in 2024. Delhi’s batting line-up looked solid before the 2024 IPL instalment as they already had David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, and Prithvi Shaw in the squad, and at the auction held in Dubai, they also reserved the services of Harry Brook and Shai Hope. After six disappointing seasons from 2013 to 2018, the Capitals rebuilt their team in 2019. During the revamping period, they added quality batters to the team and got positive results in the competitions later. In 2022, all teams went through a reshuffle due to the mega auction and DC ensured the quality of their batting unit Back in 2008, when the maiden IPL season was played, Delhi formed a strong batting unit. Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, Dinesh Karthik, AB de Villiers, and Tilakaratne Dilshan were crucial batters of the team in the first three seasons. With these names, Delhi succeeded in playing an aggressive brand of cricket in the first two seasons of the league and ended their campaigns in the knockout stage. He became the first Delhi batter to score a century. Against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) at Durban’s Kingsmead, he played an unbeaten 105-run innings off 54 balls and steered his team to a nine-run win. His innings came at a time when openers Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag went back to the pavilion on single-digit scores. In the crunch situation, the Protea batter stepped up and delivered a century to DC. Riding on his innings, Delhi amassed 189 runs on the board. With 445 runs in 13 matches at a strike rate of 136.08, he became Delhi’s leading run-scorer in the competition. Against RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, he smashed his maiden IPL century. Winning the toss in the contest, DC captain Zaheer Khan elected to bowl first. On the batting pitch, RCB put up 191 runs on the board. Following the massive target, Delhi lost Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson early but de Kock held his nerves and stitched a 134-run partnership. In his superb innings, he scored 18 boundaries (15 fours and three maximums). He lost his wicket to Shane Watson in the 19th over of the innings, after amassing 108 off 51. Delhi won the game by seven wickets with five balls left and the Protea became the Player of the Match for his stunning batting. 3. He scored 684 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 173.60. Against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium (Arun Jaitley Stadium), he notched up his maiden IPL ton. Batting first, Delhi scored 187 runs in 20 overs, with Pant’s unbeaten 128 runs off just 63 deliveries. His exceptional century is DC’s highest individual score to date. In the end, SRH registered a convincing nine-wicket win over the hosts but Pant’s knock was hailed by some cricketing greats and several fans. 2. In the Eliminator game, they clashed with Sunrisers in Visakhapatnam. Luck favoured DC skipper Shreyas Iyer as he won the toss and elected to field first. On the big day, SRH batters looked average as they could score only 162 in 20 overs. Pursuing the target, DC also found themselves in trouble as they lost their half of the batters with 52 runs left to chase in just 32 deliveries. In the challenging situation, Pant displayed courage and played some big strokes to take his team close to the total. The Southpaw went back to the pavilion after scoring 49 off 21. It was his majestic batting effort that helped the Capitals pull off the total comfortably in the end. The wicketkeeper batter also received the Player of the Match award for his plucky performance. 1. In the end, Delhi failed to win the trophy after losing to Mumbai Indians (MI) in the final but during their campaign, they played cricket superbly and left some unforgettable memories for their fans. In Qualifier 2, DC squared off with the David Warner-led SRH in Abu Dhabi and pocketed a 17-run victory. Before the match, Delhi skipper Shreyas won the toss and elected to bat first. In the huge game, Shikhar Dhawan and Marcus Stoinis opened the innings and gave a sensational start to the team. Along with Stoinis, Dhawan built an 86-run partnership off just 50 deliveries. After Stoinis’ dismissal, the opener stood at the crease and played a magnificent innings of 78 off 50. With the India veteran’s knock, Delhi gave a challenging target of 190 runs to the Orange Army.
