T20 World Cup 2024: Team-wise worst pick of the tournament league stage

As we head into the half-way stage of the T20 World Cup tournament, the Super-8 stages are starting to take their final shape. Just one place remains from Group D as the next phase of the tournament begins next week. Afghanistan and United States of America have been one of the two surprise packages of the tournament. Both sides have made it to the Super-8 phase after playing amazing cricket in the last few weeks. The likes of Fazalhaq Farooqi, Aaron Jones, and Saurabh Netrawalkar have put in some stellar performances in the early phase. While there were some amazing performances, few players managed to disappoint their team and their fans during the campaign. Either with the bat or with the ball, these players didn’t have a great tournament and turned out to be complete flops. Let's look at the team-wise worst picks of the T20 World Cup from the league stages: 10. Bangladesh – Soumya Sarkar Soumya Sarkar. The left-handed batter played just one match in the T20 World Cup tournament. It came when Bangladesh took Sri Lanka in their opening encounter and Soumya Sarkar was out for a 2 ball duck to continue his poor batting form. 9. West Indies - Johnson Charles Johnson Charles. The 35-year-old though has managed two ducks and a score of 44 from 42 balls as his only decent contribution. His average of 14.8 and strike rate under 100 though makes Johnson Charles one of the worst picks of the league phase stages of the T20 World Cup 2024. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) The T20 World Cup 2024 has been a miserable experience for former Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka. The 33-year-old has played 2 matches so far and scored a mere 12 runs and just picked one wicket in this campaign. It was his 19th over against Bangladesh that cost Sri Lanka the game and ended up getting knocked out of the tournament. 7. Afghanistan – Najibullah Zadran Najibullah Zadran. (Source -Twitter/X) With over 105 matches for his national side in the T20 format, veteran batter Najibullah Zadran was expected to be a rock in the middle-order. The Afghanistan batter has scored just 3 runs with an average of 3 and strike rate of 75 during the T20 World Cup. England – Chris Jordan Chris Jordan. (Source - Getty Images) Veteran England pacer Chris Jordan is no doubt a very talented cricketer. His form during the T20 World Cup though has been a huge let down. This makes Chris Jordan one of the worst picks from the league phase stages. The veteran star has scored just a single run from his only innings and picked 3 wickets with an economy rate close to 11. 5. South Africa – Quinton De Kock Quinton De Kock. (Photo source; ICC) Quinton De Kock was one of the best batters for South Africa during the 2023 ODI World Cup. Just over 7-months late the veteran wicket-keeper and batter has managed to score a mere 48 runs during the T20 World Cup 2024 tournament. His average reads a dismal 12 and the strike-rate under 100 makes his one of the worst picks from the league phase stages of the tournament. (Photo Source: Twitter) 33-year-old Pakistani player Iftikhar Ahmed has been one of the worst picks for his side during the T20 World Cup. The right-handed batter has scored 23 runs from 2 matches with an average of 11.5 and strike rate of 100. His inability to finish the game against India has been rightly called out after Pakistan choked during their chase in a low-scoring game. 3. India – Shivam Dube Shivam Dube. (Photo Source: Twitter) When the Indian squad was announced for the World Cup, many fans were overjoyed that Shivam Dube was part of the 15. The left-handed batting all-rounder had a decent season with Chennai Super Kings during IPL 2024. The 30-year-old though has managed to score a mere 34 runs with 31 not out against USA being the best. His dropped catch of Mohammad Rizwan could have turned costly if India hadn’t won the game. The 24-year-old came into the T20 World Cup 2024 looking to put the bad IPL 2024 performances behind him. In the two matches he has played in the campaign, Rachin Ravindra has scored just 11 runs with the bat and picked 2 wickets to endure a miserable time out in the middle. 1. Australia – Glenn Maxwell Glenn Maxwell. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) 2024 began well for Glenn Maxwell as he scored a blistering T20 century for Australia. This T20 World Cup though the 35-year-old has been at his worst and has been one of the worst picks. 39 runs from 3 innings isn’t the kind of form any of the Australian fans would have hoped from the blazing blade of Glenn Maxwell.
